Im sure it will be the Baton Rouge Fox, CW, and NBC taken off. Then Dish will only have CBS (in sd) and directv has the locals in HD

Does this mean NHLN channel is a preview? Or is it going to be part of regular programming? I see I have the channel.... I don't know if I had it before....

EDRAM is now on 345 and EWAM is on 347.

Are they moving spots?

What does this mean for HDNET ( 362 ) and HDTHR ( 364 )?

Would hate to see HDNET and HDTHR dropped. :nono2:

HDNET and HDTHR are not really on 362 and 364. They are mapped down to those. Likely the mapdowns will change to some other channels. This activity looks like a channel realignment to allow adding of some other movie package channels in the lower 300s.

If I did not know better, but it looks like either DISH will be removing Encore from AT250 or adding Starz to AT250 maybe in time for the 1 February, 2009 rate increase. Considering the ordering Encore before Starz this possibility comes to mind.

James Long

Odd that they "covered up" the HD only channels.
The first thing that comes to my mind is free previews to compensate for channel loss. :)

I don't know why so many people expect or try to tie new channels with a rate increase every year. Dish (and other companies as well) add channels throughout the year without rate increases. Dish, for example, last year added a bunch during the summer and early fall without a rate increase... so why would folks automatically assume/demand even more with the next rate increase?

I suppose companies could just add new channels only with a rate increase... but I'd rather that not become the trend!

Now back to your regularly scheduled uplink discussion :)

My guess is that no new HD channels will be added until after Feb. 1 due to the old HD Absolute package. If added before Feb. 1 the HD Absolute subscribers would get them added. I would think that Dish would wait to get some subscribers to move off that package.

Bobby H
01-02-09, 08:57 PM
If my Dish HD Absolute package remains "grandfathered" E* will have to seriously sweeten the deal to get me to change.

Just to keep what I have in programming with moving to a TurboHD setup I'm looking at a $25 per month rate increase. That's awful high a price jump in relation to my current $56 monthly bill (DishHD, SD locals, HBO).

If I have any choice, E* will have to offer quite a lot more than just 14 additional national HD networks (what they're planning to add in 2009) for me to be willing to pay over $80 per month. If they force me into a TurboHD package I'll probably downgrade significantly to keep my bill relatively low and then leave E* once my contract expires.

What E* needs to do is start figuring out a way to begin dumping SD-only channels to free up bandwidth and lower their own carriage fees. I watch very little SD quality TV anymore. As many more Americans get spoiled to the quality of HDTV as opposed to SDTV there will be far less a need to carry SD quality channels.

FastNOC

lol why would they dump SD only channels when BY FAR their subscriber base has SD tvs, not hd.

I mean, let's look at broadband. penetration for broadband in the US is only 57%. So what do you think penetration is for HD that costs 10 times more to upgrade to than broadband does to dial up.

According to what I can find it's at 25% expected to increase another 5 this year. SO a solution that will cut out 75% of the userbase is probably not a viable option

8162 WYBE 35 Philadelphia is no longer available on DiSH Network. The info says tune a couple of other channels for PBS programming.

While WYBE is a NCE it is not a PBS primary. It provides much international content and should not have been dropped. It does remain on DIRECTV.

Unfortunely, I think you're dead right. I can drive through my neighborhood and see a TON of Dish antennas, I mean like at least half the houses it seems, but a starkly low number are HD dishes, the VAST majority just Dish 500's. I think I've counted 4-5 HD dishes, but admittedly haven't done an actual count precisely. Typical upper-middle-class neighborhood, 2-5 year old homes.

I think we are very skewed on this forum, the VAST majority of customers are still SD only, sucks.

lol why would they dump SD only channels when BY FAR their subscriber base has SD tvs, not hd.

To be able to keep up with competing rivals for one thing.

Dish Network has only so much satellite bandwidth it can provide to support additional HD-quality channels while keeping obsolete SD channels still running. The company cannot keep adding more HD channels without eventually being faced with getting rid of other channels elsewhere.

The primary focus of competition betweeh cable and satellite TV providers is in HDTV. It's right there in all the advertising. There's little talk of more SD channels or lower prices in those ads.

I don't know for certain, but it would not surprise me if cable broadcast networks were charging companies like Dish Network twice to carry their signals: one charge for the SD channel and another charge for the HD channel. Afterall, those networks have to spend extra to broadcast two versions of the same channel. Eventually all the networks will have their content formatted for 16X9 HD and anyone watching the channel in SD will be stuck with a letterboxed or squeezed version of it.

Most of Dish Network's customers may indeed have only SD service. However, that lack of HD customers doesn't reflect the level of HDTV market penetration. It's estimated more than 40 million homes in the United States now have at least one TV in their home capable of receiving HDTV signals.

High programming cost is preventing a lot of customers with HDTV sets from upgrading to HD quailty pay TV service. I waited a few months after buying my 52" HDTV before signing up on the Dish HD Absolute plan. I have several friends with HDTV sets who get only SD-quality cable or satellite service. I see certain restaurants equipped with flat screen HDTV panels showing SD stretch-o-vision content. Some people may stick with getting HDTV broadcast networks over the air and sticking with SD-only service for cable/satellite.

A $80 or $100+ per month bill is not a price mainstream consumers are going to be willing to pay for cable/satellite TV. The well-heeled among us may not blink at that. Average people are searching for areas to cut costs. Pundits talk about Blu-ray and its need to lower player prices and movie prices before it can lure the general public away from DVD. What makes pay TV providers think they're somehow different?

The trouble is that the day that DISH decides to drop a dozen SD channels permanently to make way for a few HD is the day that DISH discards the majority of their 13 million customers by telling the masses that they don't matter any more. Most won't smile and say "I'll take less channels for more money, Charlie." They will leave for a carrier who isn't ditching SD feeds.

TvilleBee
01-06-09, 03:42 PM
I don't think the way to do it would be to start dropping SD channels. Sounds like a viable idea to some, completely wrong for others. I think that switching all to MPEG4 would be a better long term approach, however the cost of switching all the MPEG2 units to newer ones is a high cost in itself... would it be done for free, 50/50, or "if you want to keep getting service, buy this"? There is no easy solution...

Stewart Vernon

Last time I had any knowlege, the breakdown seemed something like 12 million SD-only customers vs 2 million HD customers. I'm probably remembering a bit high on the HD side, so consider the actual skew of SD to HD customers at Dish to be more lopsided than even I'm assuming.

I'd be surprised if DirecTV had much different of a skew in their subscriber-base.

Sure companies are advertising HD as the next big thing... that's what companies do. But if they dropped their SD channels to make room for HD they would lose a lot more customers than they would gain by doing so.

The first company to just wholesale drop SD for the sake of doing it will be the first one to go out of business. It's going to have to be a gradual thing.

Consider too that many HD "only" customers have been demanding to still get SD versions too because they want to record some things on their DVR in SD to save bandwidth and space on their hard drives... so even the HD "only" customers might pitch a fit.

What they could do is ditch the SD versions of channels that are available in HD. Then have the receiver down-rez the HD channel for SD viewers.

I've always thought it was stupid using bandwidth for SD and HD versions of the same channel, when the HD one could just be shown in SD, similar to the TV2 output of a 722.

Wouldn't have to recode before record, just let it record in HD & then just output SD like it is now on TV2 of the 622/722... If they had such a receiver / dvr that had MPEG4 - MPEG2 capabilities, but no HD outputs (HDMI or component) and just simple "CH3" & S-Vid or composite, that could possibly be used to start swapping all SD only customers to MPEG4 & allow a gradual transition to all MPEG4, not just the eastern arc...

It is better just to supply the HD receiver.

In my EA market DISHBuilder sets up new customers with ViP receivers regardless of if they add HD or not ... with no "no HD penalty" added (although DISHBuilder could be flawed). MPEG4 is the future of DISH (and DirecTV). Getting the massive installed userbases over to new receivers is the challenge.

I'm not sure how a receiver with all the guts of a ViP but no HD output would save DISH money. I expect there will be a "ViP-111" small footprint unit eventually ... but it certainly won't be an MPEG4 version of the 111. It will be much more.

I do understand what you're saying, but I can expect a lot of people to get the HD recievers for SD only service, seeing the "HD" logo on the front & immediately think they're getting "HD", much like some people who bought HD TV's early on, connected to their old SD boxes & think "POOF! HD-TV" I'm sure the cost of development, or disablement in my idea, wouldn't be cheap & will probably never happen. I was thinking along the lines of the low end tv's that are digital, but not HD, just a 4x3 tv w/ an ATSC tuner. An MPEG4 capable SD reciever would be great for something like that??

At any rate, I do apologize for hijacking an "uplink" thread...

This sort of thing is already happening in the broadcasts from a lot of local TV stations. The ABC affiliate I can pick up over the air only uses the HD feed for its broadcasts. It just does a 1.33:1 extraction from the middle of the 16X9 HD image, down-samples it and sends that out to broadcast for the SD version. They don't have their channel 7/ABC logo positioned in the bottom of the screen correctly because part of it gets clipped in that 1.33:1 extraction. The SD viewers are not seeing imagery composed for 1.33:1 SD unless the original content is 1.33:1 SD.

TV networks will showing a decreasing level of care in protecting a 1.33:1 SD frame. Viewers who want to stick with SD for a long time to come are going to see an increasing amount of letterboxed 16X9 ratio imagery, or they will more likely deal with a lot of pan and scan style cropping -the 1.33:1 extractions from the middle of the HD image.

Networks will eventually move to doing nothing but 16X9 HD broadcasts and the cable/satellite networks will be stuck having to artificially generate 1.33:1 SD versions of it on their own to keep customers with old equipment happy.

Maybe in another year, two or three, DirecTV and Dish Network are going to be competing against each other with 100, 200 or 250 channel packages of HD. What we know of as "AT250" will eventually be something like "AT250-HD." That's going to demand a huge amount of bandwidth, even with everything in MPEG-4. I don't see a bunch of MPEG-2 based SD channels being able to take up satellite bandwidth forever. I will be surprised if they're still around 5 years from now. Even if it takes swapping out millions of receivers to enable some automatic HD-to-SD conversion, companies like Dish will eventually be forced into doing something like that.

What we know of as "AT250" will eventually be something like "AT250-HD."The name change starts at the end of the month ---

AT100 (America's Top 100) is becoming Classic Bronze 100
AT200 (America's Top 100) is becoming Classic Silver 200
AT250 (America's Top 100) is becoming Classic Gold 250
AEP (America's "Everything" Package) is becoming Classic America's "Everything" Package

DISH is basically applying the HD package names to the SD packages, TurboHD Bronze, etc. for standalone HD and "Classic Bronze 100 with Bronze HD" for the combo package.

8162 WYBE 35 Philadelphia is no longer available on DiSH Network. The info says tune a couple of other channels for PBS programming.

While WYBE is a NCE it is not a PBS primary. It provides much international content and should not have been dropped. It does remain on DIRECTV.

Perhaps it was a signal issue, or lack of must-carry on time for this cycle issue. I haven't been able to contact anyone at WYBE, as their phone system goes to a feedback voicemail. Low budget station.

WYBE's programming has gone downhill imo, and certain shows appear on LinkTV and FSTV anyways. They air Bollywood movies however on Saturdays, from the Asian Variety Show. With WBPH 60, where a lot of their programming is on CTN, and FamilyNet too, so no loss in not having that station.

I contacted someone WMGM 40(NBC), and the station has delivered the signal and will be on Dish via must-carry. Dish will carry it, as I got an email upon inquiring from Dish stating they'll carry it but apparently time delay is apparently based on satellite capacity issues. I'm wondering if the bandwith for WYBE could go to WMGM atleast temporarily.

DirecTV carries WYBE, WLVT and WMGM that Dish doesn't carry, and Dish carries WWSI that DirecTV doesn't carry. WWSI offers very little local programming, and is the Philadelphia Telemundo affiliate, but perhaps signal source is an issue and it may end up on DirecTV. I think they were on DirecTV until 2005? Sister station WNEU in Boston is carried on DirecTV's lineup up there.

Long time ago, I contacted WLVT 39 about Dish carriage. The engineer said something to the effect that Dish was giving a hard time based on programming duplication. Mainly that WLVT 39's schedule atleast in primetime is identical to WHYY 12. It was also expensive on WLVT's part to get a signal to Pennsauken and not worth the effort. And from my reading, even though they are licensed to diffferent states, the different state rule applies only to commercial stations. But WVPY is similar to WETA, and Dish carries WVPY, so maybe it depends on how much the station pushes for it. WLVT is on Fios TV throughout the Philadelphia DMA where Fios TV services.
