View Full Version : DirectTV2PC: What's my bottleneck?

My goal: To allow both of my boys (5 and 2) watch a show recorded on an HR-20 on their computer at the same time. The current configuration:

5 year old: 1 year old HP Slimline, worked out of the box, integrated wireless-G network card.

2 year old: 3+ year old Pavilion a1250n, showed green on the advisor for everything except the video driver version...but ATI's current driver won't install for the integrated Xpress200 for some reason. Upgraded it with geForce 8400 GS (I knew I made sure it had a PCIe slot when I bought it for a reason), all green. USB linksys wireless-G ethernet.

HR20: Networked via wireless-G game adapter

Either computer can watch a show without problem (most of their stuff is SD, I don't need to fill up my DVD with 40 HD episodes of "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse"), but they can't both watch at the same time. So the questions become:

1) Can the HR-20 actually do that? Stream to two PCs at once?
2) If so, then the problem has to be the network. Could running a wire to the HR-20 solve the problem (cutting the wireless hops from 4 to 2), or will I have to start upgrading everything to N? I've got another server, wired, that's running playOn and TVersity and I'm having no trouble watching what they serve on the wireless-G HR-20...

Thanks in advance...

At this time, I wouldn't recommend trying two streams at the same time. It may work, but may not. It seems to me that your biggest issue will be with the Wireless-G adapter. Although it should have enough bandwidth to stream HD, some people have reported problems until they updated to Wireless-N or went wired.

Nope, the answer to #1 is you can only stream one program at a time to the remote location. You can also watch locally making it a total of two programs, but only one can be remote.

Thanks! Could never find anyplace "official" that actually spelled that out. You just saved me a lot of money and aggrevation.

It was noted early in the beta testing notes but yes you can only have 1 network stream per dvr that includes DirecTV2PC and MRV when it is implemented. You'd need 2 DVRs to get both boys watching shows at the same time.
