Thinking of switching from time warner cable to dish or directtv.

Local channels in this area are not offered in HD through either dish provider.

My question is, can I record my local channels (over the air with an antenna) in HD through either Dish or Direct TV's DVR.

Thanks,

Jerry

DIRECTV offers an outboard two-tuner OTA solution that should work (but doesn't always) with any of the HR2x series DVRs. Note that the DIRECTV solution doesn't support channel scanning (automatically finding all channels you receive).

also remember that Dish is coming out with a new unit that will have 2 ota tuners. this should allow recording 2 ota & 2 satellite channels at the same time

The K series DVR's. They are out now, just not sure how to make sure its a K series ViP722 you will get.

Good morning ten and all

Yes with dish you can record OTA channels with 211(external hard drive and one time $30-40) 612, 622 and 722 .coming soon is the 722K that will be offered Feb. first. But you must whate and see if that’s the one for you that will allow you to record 2 OTA and 2 SAT at the same time... but must sign up under the new agreement and promotions so don’t give your info b4 Feb. first for a 722K. You will be able to record all local in digital on those receivers but no guide data if you don’t pay the extra $5 for local.

With directs current HD DVRS there is no OTA tuner but you can buy one on your own dime and save $5 off your bill buy not subbing to locals (Yes Direct TV charges $5 for local they sneak it in and never tell you unless your DMA is not offered via sat) not too sure on how well it works now or if it will display guide data without the local sub...

Bolth providers are great if you like $$$ and Picture quality dish all the way!! If you’re into sports and fell like spending 200-400 extra ever year for your MLB or NFL sports pack Go direct...

Thanks guys for all your comments.

So, it appears that I can use the vip722 to accomplish what I want.

I guess another question is, do I tell Dish whenever I apply for new service that I want that particular DVR and also what I intend to do with it?

Thanks!

In your case, you should. Tell them you want the 722k with the ota module.
