View Full Version : Hughes Gaebo/Sat 101 transponder problem

I have noticed with my Hughes Gaebo IRD, that despite setting the optimal transponder for the 101 satellite, that the IRD won't hold these settings.

For example, I've set the transponders such that I'm getting high low 90 signal strength from the 101 satellite. However, there will be times when certain channels appear "dicey", picture pixels breaking up and audio very high pitched and annoying.

I go back to setup, and instead of the transponder I've set, they are at a different one, and not one that is getting very good signal (ie 0-65). It won't even stay if I set it, scroll back into that same menu, come back to it...and its gone back to that bad setting again.

Any ideas? I thought that once you set the transponder manually, that it should stay as set. Any weird quarks specific to this IRD that may be causing this?

Your receiver determines the transponder by the channel you choose. You need to peak your system so all transponders are getting at least 70%. DirecTV selects which transponder carries which channel not you.

Once again Boba..... you just have a way of putting things. Not that I don't appreciate the information, but how about taking Constructive Criticism 101? Sorry, not all of us our pros such as yourself I guess.

You don't actually "set" transponders to get a certain signal strength from a certain satellite. You instead individually select each transponder that you want to evaluate.

The chances are, the transponder that is giving you those high signal strength readings is a local spot beam. It may be transponder 4, 12, 18, 20, 26, or 28. Those are the six spot beam transponders on that satelite. Their signal strengths will vary roughy from 0 to 100. You need to set your transponder test to one of the other twenty-six transponders and peak your dish on that.

By the way, have you found the feature in the test that quickly develops a table showing the signal strength of all 32 transponders in four rows of eight? Go to the test menu, and then move the cursor two clicks to the right. I think they still call it Cable Test, or they might now call it Transponder Test.
