I was just notified by Dave Kummer that next Monday night's Tech Chat has been bumped and will instead be a Charlie Chat.
While I woulod rather have a Tech Chat I think it's good for Charlie to take the helm when there are so many announcements are to be made.
They are currently looking to reschedule the Tech Chat, I will let you know when it is rescheduled to.
Dave thanks everyone for their suggestions and questions for the Tech Chat.
Again more as we know it.

Q: Will Credit Card auto pay still work with Super Dish?
A: Only with a 1 year commitment to AT150.

Hey I would take that offer if they upgraded everything to Dishpro including my Dishes my LNB's my Switched and give me the adapters for my non DishPro receivers. :)
Since they claimed that buying a 8PSK module was all I need to see future Dish Network HD offering I will expect not to pay anything for the upgrade :)
Locals or not to locals?
AT150 preview is one step closer to go. They put the channels in the EPG stream today. Not showing on the receivers though.
Tech Forum delayed. I've heard that one before. :)
Maybe I should buy an 8PSK. Maybe they would give me the 6000 to make it work.

Delayed until three months from now, not delayed, cancelled I would say. I do hope they have the tech chat though as well in addition to the Charlie Chat.

Q: Will Credit Card auto pay still work with Super Dish?Only if you use the new Super Card. :D

Lol, why didnt I think of that before, why dont they come out with the Dish Network credit cards? They do it at gas stations and Wal-Mart and so forth, whats the difference?
This sucks...
I guess Charlie has to make up for his absence last month.
Jacob S
05-05-03, 11:31 PM
Thats what I was saying earlier, lol, but not making up for it in a Tech Chat but in a chat of his own.

Ok Charlie, with only a month to go on free "lifetime" PTV service on the Dishplayer I MUST know what's going to happen.

He wants to show everyone how giddy he is over their report of a profitable qtr (3rd in their history).
Jacob S

Whats going to happen? There is only one month of free pvr service left for dishplayer owners, its obvious what is going to happen.

Um. So why can't they have a Tech Chat a week from then? It's not like they can't find a one hour slot on that very popular 101 channel..

The chat is tonight, if you're able to, don't forget to join us for all the fun in the DBSTalk Chat Room.
Why doesn't E* ever list the chats in the EPG? It's their own darn program after all for gosh sakes, doncha know! Millions of subs without a clue - itsa darn shame, it is.
Just curious....

What are you talking about? They ALWAYS list them in the EPG. It is there right now on mine...
Jacob S
05-12-03, 12:53 PM
In the past they have not listed the chat at times.
I wonder if Charlie will give an exact date on the launch of some of the locals like he had in the past. If he does give an exact date then that is a good sign that there were no issues between Dish and the locals.

i posted their plans for Q2, Q3, Q4 (for locals)
Other then that - i'd bet - just expect the announcements on like 2 or 3 Local markets that are due in days, or weeks...
Like example: Jackson, MS - May 15th, Knoxville - May 22....
But i strongly doubt - they'd announce much more dates then those...
Originally posted by DmitriA "What are you talking about? They ALWAYS list them in the EPG. It is there right now on mine..." Perhaps the EPG stream varies according to IRD model, Dmitri. I don't recall ever having the chats listed on either of my 7200s..

Ahh a Dishplayer (7200), that explains everything
How about asking charlie if he can throw some sort of plan together to allow dish home plan customers who had no idea what a 501/508 was or what it could upgrade to pvrs!!!!

Charlie did not even talk about the Superduper dish that ppl were discussing in the forum. Wonder whether he has reserved discussion on that topic for the July "Tech forum".

The SuperDish details are still not final.
I am hearing from my sources that HDNet might be on the 110 satellite and a SuperDish might not be needed to get it.
The big question about the SuperDish is who will pay for it. The marketing team at Dish is racking their brains over that.
I will say that I am NOT going to pay for a SuperDish, I was already told that the 8PSK module was all I needed to watch future HD Channels from Dish.
If Charlie wants to install it for free for me then fine, but I have a lot of legacy equipment that is going to need Dishpro adapters to work correctly with the SuperDish
Anyone catch the first 10 minutes of the chat tonight, anything important announced? I tuned in right in the middle of the Mark Cuban interview.
Scott Greczkowski

They just announce HDNet and HDNet Moviesand ran a 5 min HDnet ad, nothing more then that at the beginning.
Go Mark Cuban!

Did Charlie mention Rupert on the chat
Scott Greczkowski
05-12-03, 08:31 PM
Yes he did (someone emailed him aboutsharing space between Dish and DirecTV for locals) and Charlie ignored the question at first and said that he thought that Rupert owning DirecTV would not be good for the consumer because of all his media interests...
After going on for awhile about this he said it would be nice to share some of the costs to bring locals to everyone via satellite.
DmitriA
05-12-03, 08:33 PM
Yes. He mentioned potential sharing of bandwidth with him and was even somewhat excited (or at least pretended to be) about the D* purchase as long as the regulatory agencies put enough of a leash on Murdoch to prevent him from competing with anyone :D
DmitriA
05-12-03, 08:35 PM
I don't think he ever said 'it would not be good for the consumer'. He just said that FCC/DoJ/Congress have to examine it carefully to make sure that his vertical integration of the industry does not kill the competition

Thanks Scott, I wonder if he'll lobby against Rupe as hard as Rupe lobbied against him.

My beef is that they don't rebroadcast it for like a week and then they do it like every 3 hours. Why can't they do it every 3 hours now. At least rebroadcast it at 12:00 mid et. Yeah, yeah, that's what a PVR 508 is for. The worst thing is I just got one. $149 NO STRINGS special deal from dish for being a valued customer, BEST DEAL EVER!!!! I just haven't gotten used to it yet. I still think I might sell it and take the $100 profit.

Hmmm, I think they give some customers special treatment while others they wont give any deals to. I think this is VERY unfair. Others just get offered a deal while others have to beg and plead and get nothing but smart attitudes from the CSR's.

That's why I made sure I got this quote right. When explaining that one of the reasons smaller markets get locals before larger ones is that some of the smaller ones actually have more Dish customers, Charlie said, "makes sense for us to invest in the customers we have." He was talking about the demand for local channels but I'm anxious to see how this is applied to the rumored future upgrade offers and what will be done for customers enduring the DISHPlayer fiasco.

I noticed that the map they showed of projected locals (lit up like a Christmas tree) was not representative of the list of locals they showed after it. For example I was very suprised to see the Erie, PA market clearly marked as a projected local but they did not list it after the map. Did anyone else see any discrepancies?
"...said that he thought that Rupert owning DirecTV would not be good for the consumer because of all his media interests."
I didn't hear Charlie say this. I was half asleep, though, and Charlie does tend to ramble on with his answers.
Zzzzzz...

If I remember correctly, it was stated while showing the map that those were the markets they hoped to have by the end of 2004. The slides they showed listing the cities were for Q2, Q3, and Q4 of 2003. Might explain the difference.
BTW, this was the worst CC I've ever watched (I did miss last months. :D ) Even after skipping over all the HDNet stuff, I can't believe I wasted those 30+ minutes of my life. I have a feeling this will be my last CC as it appears a DirectTIVO is in my future.
Because I am on the road I cannot re-watch the chat right now, but I seem to remember Charlie actually saying it was GOOD for DBS overall that Rupert was a minority shareholder, that the real compition was cable. He did then say he had some worries about the price of programming because the same owner would be producing and delivering the content. But I don't remember him outright saying it was bad for DBS. That map I believe showed CT (Hartford) with a green dot I think also, along with Rhode Island. For what it is worth, the person who gave me the info that I posted several days ago, insists Hartford is going to go up, and does not know why it is not being listed. He did get the HD Pack correct. His info on the 121 satellite appears to be wrong. Finally, unless you frequent these forums, imho there is no way to describe that chat as worst or even bad. My Brother in-law called up after all excited about the new information, and I bet the vast majority who watched it thought it was full of information they had not heard about. We are spoiled here. (Thankfully)

I too remember Charlie commenting positively on having Rupert owning a share of Direct TV. Charlie showed little hostility towards Direct TV, even throwing them customers who want the NFL package.
I just wish Charlie could show some of the enthusiasm for HD like Mark Cuban does.

I agree, Dish should foot the cost, but it should be contingent on the person purchasing the HD package, probably with some type of commitment.

Coming out soon (but not necessarily exactly with the release of SuperDish) is a DishPro Plus 44 Switch. The DP adapter is built in. So Superdish users with legacy eqmt won't need individual DP adapters

Whats funny is over the last several years, someone always says this. They are all about the same. They were good 4 years ago because they were still adding channels etc all the time. Now that most are there, what can one expect from these????
When will the Chat be repeat? I missed it.

Am I the only person NOT interested in HDTV. While it may be the wave of the future, I just can't see myself spending over $1,000 for a set. (But prices are always coming down).
It would be interesting for Dish Network to conduct a "contest" on their web site to see which channels people would like to see added.
The Charlie Chat IS a marketing tool. Use it to your advantage, like "Charlie told me" or "I heard it from Charlie" to a discount on those new receivers.
Am I the only person NOT interested in HDTV. While it may be the wave of the future, I just can't see myself spending over $1,000 for a set. (But prices are always coming down). If you think about it, $1000 isn't much when it comes to what people spend for television these days. Ten years ago, we paid less than $20/mo for cable. Now, I pay $80-$85/mo, or about $1000/yr just for television service.
When you are paying $1000/yr for television service, suddenly $1000 for a television doesn't seem so bad, particularly when you expect to keep it for a number of years. If you pay $80/mo for satellite, and another $10 to $20/mo for DVD rentals, even a $3000 television only amounts to 30% of what you will pay for TV entertainment over five years.
The average Dish customer pays something like $55 per month, or $650+ a year. That said, if you are getting the bare minimum of service from Dish Network (i.e. you are paying $25/mo or $300/yr), then I can see how $1000+ for a television can be a bit much, particularly if you don't care about picture quality. Personally though, if I am going to spend $80/mo just to watch television for no more than 10 hours a week (works out to $2 per hour per month), then I want the best viewing experience I can get.
When I see a 27" set on sale for under $270 - and I remember that, just some years ago, I paid almost $700 for it, the idea of paying $999 for a 30", widescreen tube doesn't seem so bad.

Maybe it's the spendthrift inside of me.
Look at it this way (and remember, I own a PVR). Why should I own a PVR that costs around $300 plus a possible monthly fee when I can also time-shift programming on a $79 VCR.
Same thing with HDTV. Sure, it would be nice to have a HDTV, but how much are you really going to use the 16:9 mode beyond DVDs when many stations will probably continue to broadcast in 480i?
With so little content, I have no motivation to go HD at this time. My eyes are used to SD and I won't replace a working big screen just for the sake of going HD.
Darkman
05-15-03, 04:42 PM
Same here - don't really wish to concern myself with HDTV issue at the present time :)
Well, I can see folks waiting until summer or fall, but I have to disagree a little about HDTV.
First, I DO agree w/one post about the value of money and TV sets. When I got married in '76 I paid $400 for an 18" RCA Color TV. In today's dollars that could easily be $1000 or more, and look what set you got.
But on HDTV, there is NOTHING like seeing a great movie in HDTV (I have 55" Mits) - it really is almost like a theatre experience - at HOME, my popcorn, easy chair, etc. Even if it's only occasionally, it's a TREAT ... lot's of fun.
Some things are stunning - I thought I'd fall out of my chair watching Over British Columbia or Over Ireland or Moulin Rouge.
But, for those who desire to wait, that's fine, too. It's all a transition thing, ya know.

I use 16:9 all the time since my Pioneer HDTV has a really good natural wide mode. People come into my house and think they are hd channels since they can't preceive the distortion (until I tell them how it works, then they can see it).

Will, is your Dish Home Plan finished? If so I think you can get a 508 for $149 delivered and installed. This seems like a fair price. I am sure it costs E* more than this to build and support this receiver. You have to consider more than just the cost of components to E*. E* has to design and offer 24/7 support, software updates, etc. Everyone seems to think of receivers like a TV or VCR but PVR's require a regular guide update. E* does not charge almost $300.00 for lifetime or $12.95 a month for the guide like standalone Tivo's or Replay units. (Neither does D* if you subscribe to the proper programming package).
E* and D* make money with long term programming commitments so E* may require another year commitment. After the one year the receiver is yours. You could easily sell it for the $149, check eBay.
