View Full Version : Which to connect via HDMI, component? Opinions?

Just a curiosity thing here, friends...

In my bedroom I've got a 42" Panasonic 1080p plasma TV with two HDMI inputs and two Component inputs. It's not my main TV; that one's a bigger one in the living room.

I've got an HR21-100 connected to this TV, and a deactivated HR10-250 connected to it. I have a ton of recordings on my HR10-250, so I still watch those (all in HD); hence it being still connected. Both the HR10-250 and HR21-100 are connected to the to HDMI inputs.

I just picked up an excellent upconverting Sony DVD player to connect to this TV as well. MY Blu-Ray player's in the living room.

Now, before I have to move everything around and connect this DVD player, I'm debating whether to connect IT via Component and leave the other devices as is, or switch the HR10-250 to Component and connect the upconverting DVD player via HDMI. Of course, it just may be 6 of one and half-dozen of the other, as they say. Because it's a pain to move around the furniture--that's the only way to connect this--I was just curious to see what some opinions were here.

Normally I'd just do some comparisons myself, and may eventually do that, but it's rather challenging with the moving around of all the stuff.

What do y'all think? ;)

I really can't tell much of a difference.

I was guessing that would probably be the case.

Most DVD players can't upconvert over component. Might want to check the manual first as you'll probably need HDMI to get its full potential.

PS. Why not just another blu ray, since some are available for sub $200 now?

Good point. I'll have to check that.

Because (a) this isn't going to be used that much--might just use it mostly for adult movies (hehe), and (b) it was cheap, under $100.00

I can see the difference--only if my system isn't grounded cleanly. I can get some 60hz video bands on component lines if everything isn't cleanly grounded. HDMI is always clean.

Aside from that, the other comments about some players not upconverting on component is very true--if the content is protected. Unprotected content is normally upconverted. (But given the materials you list, that might not be safe...) :)

Happy Joygerm day!
