View Full Version : Installation Suggestions?
Well, I'm getting the 508 installed today that I mentioned in an earlier upgrade post.
Do you have any tips on install details I should request so that I am better equipped for a 921 when it comes out?
Here is my current plan. I'm going to have them install the free 2nd Dish at the same time so that I'm pointed at HD when I need it. I currently have a Dish 500 that was installed 2 years ago. I'm pretty sure it has 2 LNBs (as opposed to the quad LNB? or something like that).
I'm going to put the 508 on top of my 501 in the basement with the widescreen. :) I'll connect the 508 to the big screen and have the 501 running through the rest of the house for the other 2 TVs.
Now, I don't know what I'll be able to ask for, but I'm hoping I can request certain wiring, switches, etc., that will make a home install of a 921 easier. At that time, I would like to have one 921 (dual input) and the 508. The 501 would go to Ebay.
Thanks in advance for any tips,
-todd
Wow! Talk about an unpopular topic I posted! :D
I'm home now in the winning "12:00 - 5:00" timeslot. Sure wish they could give you a better idea or else a cell call headsup so you don't have to take off an entire half day and risk getting stiffed in the end if they run late.
Ahh well...decided to smoke some meat this afternoon since I'm home for several hours! :coffee:

I wouldn't stack the 501 & 508 on top of each other as they produce quite a bit of heat.

Well the 921 will need two outputs on an lnbf for two tuners, but it may not need two wires with a new solution they are coming out with in which runs two receiver feeds into one wire in which gets split back out to the two receivers after the cable is run to the house. Also with the new SuperDish coming out its hard to tell if you can use the quad on that or not.
Thanks!
Yup...was home 12-5, they didn't show, but i got in touch with the installer & they said they'd be here by 6:00. Turns out I could have stayed at work....but then I wouldn't be 1/2 of the way through making some great smoked pork BBQ! :D
Phew...the 12-5 installer showed up at 7:00 and finished at 10:30. But, he was a nice guy, seemed to know what he was doing, and did a fine job wiring everything.
I now have both dishes on my house and both PVRs in the same general area. So, when the right dual tuner PVR comes along, at least I'll have two lines coming to it...which should make some option easier, anyway.
AND the big bonus I didn't realize until today... Now that I have both receivers in one area, I can use my TVs PIP function!!! I've never used it before, when I watch the home theatre TV, I have two tuners right there! :D
I'm definitely glad I took advantage of the $199 offer with free installation. I couldn't find the PVR for cheaper AND if it took a pro over 3 hours, it would have taken me a full day...not including the trips to home depot and radio shack!

I'm curious about your "free 2nd dish" mention. Did you have to sign up for anything that uses a 61.5/148 feed to get that? Or did you just say "I'd like the 2nd dish installed so that I can get HD TV some day" and that was all it took...
My Dad is about to sign up as a new subscriber with the 508 package. I'll have him get the extra dish so that he'll be ready for HDTV later if all he has to do is ask... Please let me know...
- John...
Dish has had a promotion for a while to get the free 2nd Dish. I just asked for it. For me I get I think 5 extra channels. Nothing major just some locals, a spanish channel and I think another PBS.
I wanted it because it points to HD which I may need someday. Plus it was free and since they were coming out anyway I figured what the heck.
So, I did not have to refer to any special mailing, coupon, offer, etc....I just asked for the "free 2nd Dish you are offering." and received it, no questions asked.

I think the question was whether you signed up for locals? Dish gives the free 2nd dish when you have a locals package that has channels on one of the wing birds. If you didn't signup for locals or one of the international packages and got the 2nd dish just for asking then that is something others are interested in.

hmmmm...i do pay for locals, but did not receive anything letting me know it was tied to locals. makes sense though.

Yep. The "promotion" you got was actually Dish complying with the law that doesn't let them charge more to get some of your locals (ones on 61.5) than others (on Dish500).
