View Full Version : What does the protection plan buy you on HRnn?
D* recently replaced my one year old HR21-700 because of a faulty hard drive. The replacement was a refurb HR21-100. D* charged me $19.95 plus tax. I later got credited for the charge, because D* failed to get the replacement to me in two days.
D* suggested that I get the protection plan. What does the protection plan do on the dvr's? Is the fail rate so high on the HR-nn's that I need extended protection? I really don't mind paying $20.

Protection plan will give you added protection for the wiring, dish, and all receivers on your account. It will also give you free shipping if you need a replacement receiver.

There would have been no charge, even if they had got it to you in time. The value of the protection plan is less now that service calls have been reduced to $49.95. It used to be that 1 service call would offest the cost of the plan, but now will usually take 2 visits or more than 3 receiver shipments. But it does cover all the items that you 'OWN' like dish, LNBs and cabling.
There are many threads dealing with it's value here. This one (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=147435&highlight=Protection)is probably the best one recently.

The "Soup Nazi" returns! And as usual, he is correct. For a few bucks extra a month the PP is well worth every cent.
Shame the Pats got left out of the playoffs, my condolences.

Thanks for the replies and link. After reviewing, I think I will pass on the ESP.

Rich, where have you been?
Haven't seen you posting much lately.
I am just about to put a 1 TB drive in my newly purchased and OWNED HR23-700 until I can get a 2 TB AV-GP Drive to put in it but I can't wait to have 4 tuners with 2 TB of space so I can Record 4 Programs at once and have plenty of space!!!
Best 11-5 team
You could have stopped right there! Had they made it in instead of one of the other teams, I think we'd be watching them play this sunday.
Unless I'm mistaken, without the PP, directv automatically restarts your 2 year commitment when they send you a replacement receiver. Is that not the case?

This does happen but shouldn't as far as I know.

With the PP, CSR's seem to be more willing to just ship a replacement receiver for a problem that is most likely caused by a defective receiver. If you don't have the PP, then they seem to be more likely to want you to schedule a $50 service call to investigate, unless it's an obvious receiver failure (i.e. smoke). For me, it's worth the $6/mo not to have to argue. Plus, three of my service calls that it covered were bad LNB's and multiswitches.

My thoughts were of you that day. Sadly, being a Jets fan, my expectations were fulfilled. Favre, indeed! So typical.
To get back on the subject, you wouldn't believe how many PMs I get asking about the PP and after composing an answer, I get, "Well, I'm not giving D* any more money."
My grandmother used to call that "Penny wise and pound foolish".

Been spending most of the time on the Capacity thread.

Trying to break my addiction before carpal syndrome sets in.

I've got one 2TB eSATA almost (8% Available) full and am having no problems at all.
Why don't you put a 1.5 hard drive in your 23? I think we've come to the conclusion that as a hard drive becomes close to full, slowdowns occur (frequent restarting seems to alleviate this symptom), so as you become close to filling a 1TB up it will tend to slow down and the 1.5 will go way past 1TB before it slows down, performance wise.

I've read about this happening. I've always had the PP, but it seems that the CSRs will try to extend your commitment if you let them. I think I've read several posts where the posters fought back and they did not extend their commitments.
