About 4 years ago D* offered an a la cate plan in which you could chose 10 channels on an ala carte basis. Is anything similar still available?

Dont you mean E* ? They do not offer this anymore but offer an Encore Thematic package, locals, movie packages, adult channels, and a hunting channel ala carte but charge you an extra $5 fee per month for not taking a basic package such as top50, top100, or top150.

CableVision R/L DBS is planning on launching a service by year's end at 61.5 that will offer some channels ala carte like Dish had done.

They offer several channels a la carte, but not too many main stream ones. This is because the channels themselves do not want to be sold a la carte. Take a look at this page:

Action Pack is not available anymore I have heard. If some of the channels do not want to be sold ala carte then how come is CableVision Rainbow R/L DBS going to be selling some of them ala carte?

Thanks Jacob, but I guess you didn't click on the ActionPack link:

"This package has been discontinued as of 6/02. CNN Sports Illustrated went dark due to lack of viewership and light carriage on cable systems. Speedvision was sold to Fox and the channel moved from AT150 to AT100.

The Outdoor Channel is still available a la carte for $1.99 a month."

Methinks the package on DISH was called "DISH PIX"?

It was, and it's no longer offered. See the EKB Dish Pix Programming page (http://echostar.swiki.net/120) for the channels that used to be available.
