Comedy Central Going HD

Network will have 200 hours of HD programming at launch.

By Alex Weprin -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/13/2009 11:25:00 AM

Sometimes the humor is in the details. That may be what Comedy Central is hoping when it launches a high definition version of the network. Comedy Central HD will be going live on Cablevision, DirecTV and Cox later this month, with additional carriers expected to be added throughout the year.

"Comedy Central HD mentioned as going live on DirecTV this month."

Just yet another channel with next to zero actual HD content (can we say all together now, 'stretcho-vision'!) that will take 6-12 months before they actually do.

But it's Viacom, right? So they get preferential treatment.

Did you even read the linked article?

200 hours of HD at launch.
Including two of their popular shows: South Park and Reno 911! new seasons entirely in HD. A bunch of their specials, and it appears that the new Stand Up Comedy airings would be in HD>

Then the Daily Show and Colber Report, being upconverted (which would be an improvement in PQ), while they transition their sets and equipment to native HD.

I would hate to see what your definition of "not next to zero" is.

From the article: "To go along with the conversion, the network will be boosting its HD programming lineup. At launch the network will have 200 hours of native HD programming, including nearly 30 episodes of South Park and the first two seasons of The Sarah Silverman Program. A number of feature films, stand up specials and Comedy Central Presents will also be in HD."

While not 100%, it looks like a bit more than 0%. The Daily Show with John Stewart and The Colbert Report will be "upconverted."

8760 hours of programming each year (24*365)... and they have 200 hours of programming in HD... let's deduct a third for paid programming... 5840 hours to fill...

They have 200 to start with, but you need to account for repeats.

If each show gets repeated say 5 times within the next 6 months, you are looking at effectively 1000hrs or effective HD coverage for the first half of the year. That gives them 6 months to buy some other movies and shows.

Theres going to be at least 200 hours of HD Programming at the start i dont call that little to no content for starting.Excited about South Park in HD and they should have Season 12 in HD also since its going to be on blu-ray. It is going to look awesome compared to the SD Channel.

The travel channel has all their HD content encoded to European standards which has the bits in the reverse order of the American standards. And the wrong side of the bitstream too. :) :)

I can only guess there are ongoing negotiations of some form holding Travel Channel back. Could be technical negotiations or contractual.

Or DIRECTV's marketers might have decided the channel isn't worth the total cost to deliver to the home at this time; tho I kinda doubt that. Travel could, in theory, have some great HD content I would think.

NONE REPEAT NONE of these show were produced or filmed in widescreen format, PERIOD. LOOK at the production specs (on IMDB and elsewhere) and you'll quickly find out that these will be 'stretch-o-vision'.

Yep, they'll be in HD all right, 3x4 HD. The Daily Show and Colbert is what, 1 hour a day out of 24 (okay, 2 hours with repeats!). So, 12% of their schedule, x months from now. Neat!

Next to at least 15-20+ real HD produced shows and networks they could have gotten, this is the bottom of the barrel. Again, the fact it's Viacom has more than anything to do with it.

You will not see Strech-O-Vision on a Viacom network channel, due to none of the others stretch why would they start on CC.Also a source on AVS forums says it wont be in Stretch-O-Vision. The only networks i know that stretch right now Are A&E Owned networks and Turner Networks(TNT and TBS).

They already do have a lot of great content in HD and have for some time now. Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, Strange Foods, Samantha Brown's Weekend Vacation, they've all been filmed in HD for a couple seasons now. As well as many of their specials.

From what I understand, Discovery bought out Cox's share in the Discovery Channel company, and part of that agreement was that The Travel Channel would be owned by Cox. Not that any of this is an excuse for DirecTV not to have the Travel Channel. Other providers are carrying it, but for some reason, under Liberty Media's control, DirecTV just can't seem to negotiate their way out of a wet paper bag.

Comedy Central Hi Def went live yesterday. Who knows why DirecTV couldn't work out carrying it upon the channel's launch.

Mr. Fuzz, I didn't see the program you mentioned, but I find it difficult to imagine that Comedy Central's SD quality could be worse than it has been. I am looking forward to the HD channel, not for HD content so much as improved quality on the Daily Show and the Colbert Report.

Yes, the entire bolded portion of my original post was all farce. I hoped more people would realize the "wrong side of the bitstream" coupled with the smilies. :)

Yes, I assume the signal is easily encoded for DIRECTV. There must be some other reason for the delay.

Desire for the channel likely does not matter. That is likely a pure marketing decision, hopefully based mostly on market research and analysis.

Now, during the negotiations, personalities can have an affect, of course. Therein might be some part of the picture; but I would hope it would be minimal as everyone would aspire to being professional.

What can happen, we've seen it time and again, is how networks and affiliates can overestimate the value of their channel being in HD. (They certainly know their costs for going HD.) :) Yet, I would understand that. If I've worked very hard to build a great channel, I too would call it better than it might really be... :)

Cheers,
Tom

Even if Comedy Central has little real HD content like other Viacom channels, it will still be a huge improvement. Look at the quality difference on Directv between the VH1 HD channel and VH1 Classic SD one ( the PICTURE quality - not the content). Plus they don't wreck their SD content with Puke-O-Vision like Turner, A&E + others do.

I can't imagine that there are any Comedy Central shows that have a higher viewership than these two. I would think that would make them a priority to move them to HD ASAP. From reading stories about the effort it takes to build and/or equip a studio for HD, I'm surprised it will take that long, but not surprised it might take at least 6 months. HD is still a long way from plug and play.

And they might be watching the cash flow carefully in this transition.

But, if I set up a paypal account and all the fans who watch these shows chip in a buck or two (I'd be happy to kick in $5 one-time), I bet we'd get the cost covered in about ten minutes. :)

The most recent season of "South Park" is being released on Blu-Ray in March (http://www.amazon.com/South-Park-Complete-Twelfth-Blu-ray/dp/B001O0TWXQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1232036276&sr=1-1).

When those episodes were airing, it was fairly obvious to me that they were produced in widescreen, and Comedy Central was cropping them to 4:3 for the broadcast -- there were some scenes where characters were partway off the edge of the screen for what seemed like no good reason.

From reading stories about the effort it takes to build and/or equip a studio for HD, I'm surprised it will take that long, but not surprised it might take at least 6 months. HD is still a long way from plug and play.

And they might be watching the cash flow carefully in this transition.

One thing to keep in mind is that although these shows air on Comedy Central, they are not produced there. The shows are on stages owned by NEP, and it is they who would have to bear the cost of upgrading the studios.

More on NEP studio facilities can be found on their website:

Just got an e-mail forwarded from a dealer friend that said Comedy Central HD was going live 1/21/09....enjoy starting this next week Wednesday....

I guess the fact that it is starting the day after the Inauguration is merely a coincidence...

The Daily Show and Colbert are going to look so much better. Hopefully this means G4 is coming soon.
G4 is ownded by Comcast, CC is owned by Viacom

You think the Travel Channel delay might have something to do with who owns it?
Cox owns it.

Which is interesting. Cox owns the Travel Channel. Comcast own E!, G4 and Style (along with Golf and Vs., which we have in HD).

D* owns the MLBN (or a good portion of it). Both Cox and Comcast now have MLBN HD on their systems. So why can't D* get the HD channels owned by Cox and Comcast? I think a little trade out could have been worked out?

BTW, so much for having one HD thread. ;)

I didn't save it because it was censored. I thought it was supposed to be uncensored.

I was not aware of that, but after viewing the first few minutes, you are absolutely correct. Forever just ended. I deleted it.

Yeah, imaginationland was I remember now. I think that was upconverted, not stretch-o-vision, though and not filmed in HD.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was produced in high-def. They've had the capability for a while. "Good Times with Weapons" was done in high-def, and it was made in 2004.

Actually all of the major cable and sat nets own a piece of the MLB network. That's how they managed to get it the largest launch ever.

inDemand also owns an equal portion as DirecTV of the MLB Network, which of course is in turn owned equally by Time Warner, Cox and Comcast... and the carriage of MLBN was governed by the settlement of the anti-trust lawsuit Sen. John Kerry started against DirecTV being able to exclusively carry Extra Innings.

IIRC prior new HD channels showed up in the DirecTV web channel guide, but I don't see it listed for tomorrow or Thursday. That doesn't give me a good feeling.

There's been several times they haven't showed up on the DirecTV web channel guide.

However, Comedy Central HD is showing up right now for DirecTV on Zap2it.com as well as on my Stand-Alone TiVo.

I've had Comedy Central HD since I caught this thread on Sunday:

http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=150390

Nothing is true HD, the black pillar bars are part of the picture.

However the picture compared to the SD feed on both my DLP and projector is a heckava lot better.

The only way I can get to this is to quicktune, can't get to it by hitting previous channel, not in guide. There is no Comedy Central HD logo only the words.

So I am hoping that it gets added as planned and speculated on.:)
