View Full Version : Is Dish 6000 a safe bet?

I have been waiting for about three months to buy a HD receiver. I have Dish Network right now but will switch to Direct TV if there HD turns out to be the better deal and with all the "superbird and new HD receiver talk" with Dish I want to be sure I am not wasting my money, because I am a college student and it took me a while to save up $600 for the receiver. SO is it a safe bet? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Justin

It's a safe bet that the 811 will take atleast 6 months to come out. At that time, you can sell the 6000 for atleast what you paid for it I believe. Go ahead and get the 6000; HD is worth it.

I have two 6000's, however since they have stopped producing them its NOT a safe bet. Several new models including the 811 and 921 are coming out. The only question is how long befre they are available.

ps: if any one you know needs Closed Captioning, the lack of this feature on the 6000 for HD stations, which is one of the questions I asked early on, is why they are discontinued.

HD Is a good bet don't wait, you'l enjoy it thouroughly!
The 6000's downfall is a very slow guide. The 811 supposed to
be corrected. Yes you can resell the 6000, but the 811 is going
to be lower priced, probably only a hundred will be all they'll go.
Depending where you live, can factor into your choice of C* or
D*. With HD Net by the end of summer, that should make the score even between the 2 providers. You need to use the search button to enforce your deceison on who to use. D*'s equipment
is superior to C*'s right now and with your budget you'll have to
spring for the 8VSB with the 6000. The 811 will be included like D*
does now for OTA locals.

Um, I'm curious why you expect to be able to sell your 6000 for at least what you'd pay for it now (which is a lot -- they are certainly not cheap now even used) after something like the 811 is released? I just don't see how that makes sense unless you know something the rest of us don't. Once the 811 is released -- or any other HD units for that matter -- I see the 6000 dropping significantly...

Yeah, I'd see taking a couple hundred dollar hit on the 6000 once the 811 hits the scene. Although what the 811 price will be is certainly still up in the air. I suspect it's a market reaction to D* more than anything else.

Yes, the Model 6000u is compatible w/SuperDish & is capable of receiving future HDs. As a matter of fact, with the new DishPro+ platform no Legacy Adapter will be required.

mjb,

If you buy now, they'll install two satellite dishes (one for standard channels, one for HDTV). In July, only one "Superdish" will be required for all standard channels and HDTV, eliminating the need for the second dish. Given the Superdish won't be available until July (8-10 hd channels at initial launch), you may want to wait until then if you haven't made the jump already. Dish Network says the Superdish will provide capacity for up to 50 HD channels in the future.

By the time the Superdish is available in July, we might have more information on the 811 (6000's replacement), which will offer DVI output for a slightly better picture on your DLP than you'd get with the 6000. But if you absolutely must have HD now, you could buy a 6000, the two dish setup, and then replace it with the Superdish, and possibly even the 921 HD PVR at some point.

What happens in July @ Sears, do they unbox the dishs in their
double box, pulling the 500 & 300, adding the Superdish?
Whats the current 6000 inventrory?

There seem to be plenty of 6000s available at the distribution centers. Evidently, they planned ahead knowing that the new models won't be showing up before late summer or fall.
