is this something that exists currently, or just a pipe dream for the moment?

This is not a pipe dream but it is not a feature in the current offerings. It is being tested.
Multi Room Viewing (MRV) is a highly anticipated feature that should be coming soon. Nothing public as of yet though besides Directv2PC for watching content on your PC.

I think I am missing something here. I set up and use D* on demand, mediashare and directv2pc. As far as mrv, what part does Directv2pc play in this? Obviously, why watch tv at home on a small screen when I can watch it on any of the big sets? I can't watch tv on my work pc (Gov't), they block any worthwhile sites. Is that the only benefit, to watch it elsewhere if you can?

It will not be functional outside of your own LAN.

Of course you can always run cables from the DVR to the other room. :)

I understand that. I'm wondering where the Directv2pc part will make this happen.

Its not that Directv2Pc will make MRV happen, its that Directv2pc is available NOW to view your content on your PC. MRV will allow you to share your recordings between your HR2x's instead of just between your HR2x and your PC, MRV just hasn't been released.
I understand that. I'm wondering where the Directv2pc part will make this happen.I believe the simple answer is it they are mutually exclusive. DirecTV2PC has nothing to do with MRV. However, I'm sure there are common coding principles in the whole server/client sharing concept.

DirecTV2PC serves two functions: first it allows you to view whatever you have on your DVR on a PC or laptop that perhaps would be convenient in a room without a TV. DirecTV2PC also served as a test bed for some of what will be necessary to complete MRV which will ultimately allow viewing of programs recorded on a dvr thru other supporting receivers or another dvr.
Neither will allow you to view content outside of your home network... you might want to look into a Slingbox for that.

You don't have to run cables to another room.
Simply unplug your DVR and move it to another room and plug it back in.

Technically, DIRECTV2PC is Multi-Room Viewing. You're watching content on your PC from a DIRECTV receiver in your house. It's certainly not for everyone because of the (likely) small screen size, but it's available today (in beta).
What's not available is to use a DIRECTV receiver to watch content from another DIRECTV receiver. I imagine more folks (yourself included) will find this option more to their liking. This is what is being talked about in the true sense of Multi-Room Viewing.
But keep your eyes open .. It's coming at some point.

Doug, you are correct. I want 2 more hd/dvr's to replace 2 of my 3 other non-dvr receivers. I am holding off because I don't want another 2 year commitment. I am fairly satisfied with D* and not one to switch providers just for a new promo gimmick. But....
Fios is coming and I already pay a premium for internet with Comcast, and a large amount to verizon for home phone service. My employer (county agency) requires a land line so I can't give that up yet. Many on the forums say Directv2pc is a precursor to mrv and I just don't grasp the connection. I must really be missing something. Sorry for the novel.

DirecTV2PC os a precursor to MVR in a pretty straight forward way. To get DirecTV2PC working they had to make the HR2X's act as a server sending their recordings out over the network to a client. The client in this case happens to be software running on a PC. There was a lot of testing done on this and the server functionality is now in the national release and the client software for PCs is a beta available to anyone who wants to register for it. The HR2X's can already act as a client for media servers with the media share under movies and more menu. All that is really left is a little bit of tweaking of the process and probably some easier to use GUI to connect the existing client to the now existing server. DirecTV2PC is what leaves us that short step away.
But keep your eyes open .. It's coming at some point.
I guess at some point is the year '201n.'

I use my laptop to watch video from my upstairs DVR on my TV in the livingroom.
I use my desktop upstairs to watch video from my downstairs dvr on my TV upstairs.

Be nice if the HD-DVR had another coax line-out with a home run and they utilized the SWM frequency/technology:eek2:

I have standard SD boxes in the rooms and an HD DVR in the family room. I want to upgrade one of the SD boxes to an SD DVR. Will the SD boxes be able to receive the MRV ability? Should I go ahead and upgrade? I hate watching Dora the Explorer on my 62".:p

The only SD unit I'm sure of that can be networked is the R22, but I don't know if it will ever be MRV capable.

It also will not work on Remote Desktop :( They did a good job of securing it unfortunately.

Yeah, it's so "secure" that you can't even use it if you have dual monitors.
