Tivo Debuts Slimmed Down TV Service (http://news.com.com/2100-1041_3-1000591.html?part=dht&tag=nhl)

Sounds like a really smart move. Definitely to their advantage to slice up their technology to meet demands with a variety of different niches. In the end, the larger their presence all over the market the better.

Maybe even E* can license some to get name based recording capability. ;)

I really wonder what the benefit of the slimed down service is (other than just providing well working and familiar SW to the purchaser, and the ability to ugrade if really serious) But I personally went with a 508 instead of another TiVo to avoid the Monthly/Lifetime cost the 2nd time around. Would someone buying two of these devices to pay for the service twice ($600 lifetime) I guess like my SA TiVo/w4900 and 508 setup have two of these devices and only have the service upgraded on one.

The CEO of Tivo said he felt price was the biggest barrier to the market. Looks like he is investigating other less expensive avenues to get his product in homes. More name recognition and more possible upgraders? I don't think this strategy could hurt.
