View Full Version : 'Convert' AU9 to SL3?
The new SL3 LNB eliminates the 110/119 satellites from the mix and was the solution for me. I suppose a SWM solution would work too, but it is more expensive.
I bought one from Solid Signal and it was a simple swap out of the LNB's. No dish realignment needed. I re-ran the sat guided setup and selected "slimline 3" as the dish.....and guess what, the problem is completely gone!! All signal levels have returned to the 90’s on both tuners.

Is it really that simple? Just swap the LNB assemblies? No dish realignment? I live in ZIP Code 22030, will I lose any programming if I "drop" the 110/119 sats?
TIA,
Eben

Yes it is that simple. The 5 LNB slimline dish and the 3 LNB slimline dish are the same just different LNB assembly.
Just be careful swapping them so you don't move the dish.
It is very easy. You should also redo the sat setup and select the SL3 once your done swapping it. I did it a while back because I have LOS issues with 119.

Michael,
Are you near Washington, D.C.?
I live in Fairfax, Va. (22030), is it "safe" to "drop" the 110/119 sats?
Thanks.

I am actually just outside of Baltimore.
You do not need SAT's 110 and 119. The only thing on there is the MPEG2 HD channels which you don't need.

As long as you don't get any SD locals from 110/119 or have any interest in Jadeworld or Para Todos programming you can do the swap.
But, if everything is working fine, why bother?

Not only is it that simple for 5LNB to 3LNB but I did the same thing to go from 5LNB SWM-5LNB. :)

I have been reading dbstalk threads since 11/2008, was waiting on HR23-700's being more plentiful, finally took the plunge. Following installed by D tech on 1/27/09.
Being new this is an attempt at what I think I know about my configuration:
D12-700 SDT conected to ---old Sharp 26"
HR23-700 HD-DVR connected to LG 42" 1080i
HR21-200 HD-DVR connected to Sony 40" 1080p
H21-200 HD connected to LG 36" 1080p
H21-200 HD connected to Sony 26" 1080p
Slimline Dish using SWM - 3
The dish originally had a LNB-5 but the tech changed it to the 3.
First three sets work fine, last two (HR21-200) keep requiring the boxes to be reset. Some times the Satellite signal is not acquired on resetting and other times they complete.
Noticed looking in System Setup the first three sets all have the Dish Type as Slimline-3S (SWM). The two bad ones have the Dish Type set as 5-LNB, Multi.
Do I need to change the System Setup dat? Where can I find information on how to enter Satellite Setup data if I need to change the dish type listed.
If I get this new LNB I can just swap the LNB or do I need a new dish also? Right now I have a slim 5 with four lines running into the house to my multiply switch.

This is from memory, but should be close enough. Menu-> Setup - System Setup - Satellite - Repeat Sat Setup.

As long as you have the second generation Ka/Ku dish, aka AU9, aka Slimline, aka Slimeline  it's just a LNB swap. If you have the first gen dish, then no, you need to swap the dishes.
Thank you, that will be cheaper then buying a SMW.
It is even feasible to change directly from AT9 to SL3, it is a little more that just the LNB, you have to replace the reflector and LNB arm but if you keep everything aligned as it was, they are bolt in replaceable. I went from AT9 to SL5 ODU, I didn't have to do any aligning, it was straight forward.

The thing to remember is that the SMW LNB can't support non-SWM receivers and has a limit of 8 tuners total. If that's not a problem then certainly the SWM LNB is the way to go in terms of cost. It might be even slightly easier to install though I can't imagine doing it much quicker than the 15 or so minutes it took me to install the SWM-8 and splitter.

Thanks for the response. Not only do the two boxes not have the swm3 entered they have different positional dat entered. Should all five boxes have the same az, el, & tilt?
I have had some issues on my locals so I called DTV and the installer came out this afternoon and he replaced the LNB from the 5LNB to the 3LNB. He said this is a fix that has been curing a lot of problems. Easy to install and reconfigure, signal strength now at the upper 90s to 100.
