I just got a replacement HR21-200 for a box that was going out. I installed and activated the box just fine, but I'm having a really weird issue with the remote/box.
Whether I just turn on the box or change the channel, the box becomes completely unresponsive to remote signals until I hold any button on the remote down for 3-4 seconds. Then once the box finally recognizes that long key press it begins to respond normally.
The dvr is connected to a Samsung LCD via HDMI and is running the latest software release.
I did notice that if I reboot the box through the menu, the responsiveness is where it should be, but after a while, the initial delay comes back. Again, this only happens when I change the channel or bring the box out of standby.

You might be having backlight IR problems/interference from the TV, which is a common problem. Have you tried switching into RF mode with the remote?

Solved my problem, sort of. The remote delays have to do with using native resolution. If I use native on, it takes a couple extra seconds to tune in a channel, at least while using HDMI. I'm assuming this has to do with switching resolutions and HDCP handshaking. Anyway when this process happens, there will be this button input delay I've experienced. If I turn Native off, the delays is completely gone. This problem looks to be a combo between the TV ans The HR21. Unfortunately using native is the only way to fly because my TV does a much better job of up-converting to 1080p than the HR21.

Thats pretty odd.

I have this same problem. I thought it was my remote battery, but its not.
It seemed to have started after I moved my tv back after getting a new carpet installed.
If i hit power on the remote, my tv goes on, but nothing comes on the TV unless I press up on the remote, or enter a channel number. If I press up to change a channel it take 2-3 seconds. You would never know if you hit the button or not, but if you look closely you can see the current picture stutter a bit before the channel change.
I have a samsung 46 DLP by the way. Not sure of the box. Its just an HD box. No dvr. I think its HR21??

Sonys and Sammys both have had HDMI problems with the HRs. They work with every other HDMI device. But if you're worried about 1080p, you have no choice but to use the HDMI connection. Just try using the component hookup and see if that works better with Native on. If it does you know you are one of the lucky souls who have HDMI incompatability issues. I went thru that with two Sonys. Switched to component and all the problems went away. Bought a Panny plasma and have had absolutely no HDMI issues.
