Multiple PVR's

I just called Dish and they said because I already have one 501 and I am on the Lease program, I can't upgrade any of my other 3 301's, I would have to go out and buy my own PVR. What's up with that?

That is your contract with DISH Network. You signed a 1 year contract that provided 1 receiver could be upgraded to a PVR. After the 1 yr. is up you can return 1 to all of the receivers without penalty. Before the year is up there is a penalty clause for changing or canceling. If you want a second PVR before the 1 yr. you can buy the PVR and add it to your account as the 5th receiver for an additional $5per month mirroring fee, but you must keep your original 4 receivers active on the account. You don't have to use all 5 receivers.

I have passed my one year, I simply want to replace a 301 with a 501/508. I don't want any more than 4 receivers.

Spartanrob call DISh and arrange to return 1 of your 301's ask how much it will be to order a 508 through them. You will have to buy the PVR that is your contract with DISH. You cannot lease more than 1 PVR under their contract.
