I've installed a single LNB dish and a couple 3LNB for friends using just the receiver tones as an "alignment tool" a while back. Is installing the new 5LNB much more difficult?
Living in the Bergen County (Northern NJ) area could I use just the new 3 SAT dish (101, 99,103) or would I need the 5 LNB to get all my SD & HD locals & programming? I would think the 3 sat would be easier to install.

If you have NYC locals and don't require Spanish or Chinese programming you can use the 3LNB Ka/ku. The dish is exactly the same to install just different LNB.

The Slimline 3 and Slimline 5 dishes are basically the same from an installation point of view, except when you install an SL5 you have the additional benefit of using 119 to get better alignment - but if the dish mount is plumb then 119 will be set up OK by just setting the tilt to the number for your location. However you can't just use tones to set up either of the dishes. You can set them up using the signal meter on the receiver (one person at the receiver and another at the dish) - I have done a few of them this way. Using a proper meter is better though.
But if you are going to HD then DirecTV will install the new dish for you.

No intent for HD at this time but my father needs a new dish. Figured we might as well put up a 5LNB since we have to replace it anyway. He currently has a an old 3LNB but didn't even need that. Since there is no HD receiver available but his TiVo does show all 3 sats if we get it setup for just 101/110/119 can we assume it will automatically get 99 & 103 as well if/when the time comes or will it need realignment?

If you do the dithering fine adjustment procedure properly, it should work. However just because you have 101, 110 and 119 good does not mean you will automatically have 99 and/or 103 good.
