View Full Version : Splitting signal/sharing receiver
Currently hve a 5lnb slimline dish hooked up to a Zinwell multiswitch 6x8. Subscribe to HD. Want a HD/DVR that will be used by two tvs. First tv is HD and the other is SDTV for now. Understand one will have to watch the same channel. The standard tv has svideo, component and rca jacks to receive the signal. Will the HD/DVR be able to output the HD signal and also the SD signal at the same time? If so, what type of connection should be used for the SD signal. The SDTV would need about 25' of wiring. Thanks for any help.

All of the outputs are present simultaneously, so that will work. The best picture quality would be with component, followed by s-video then composite. A good source for long cables at reasonable prices is http://www.monoprice.com.

All outputs are active, however, the HDMI and component outputs have the same resolution, and thus you cannot output HD 720 or 1080 via hdmi to your hd and 480 to your sd tv via component. Thus you use the next best output, the s video and rca audio

I would bet "component" is really "composite" for the SD TV.
If it is a tube SD TV many will still take 720p or 1080i over component. Actually can look quite good, though not HD. But much better than standard SD connections.

"New" [aka late model] SD "tube" TV?

Also, given that it's almost certain that you'll have 2 size formats (16:9 for the HDTV, 4:3 for the SD), you'll probably have some issues with some programming not being sized right for one TV or the other, depending on how the receiver is outputting. Not much you can do about that.

Yes, many of the later tube TVs had component inputs and could take an HD signal.
I had one, and I have a few family members that still have them. They are kind of like HD lite as they are better than SD, but worse than a true HD TV.

my "newest" SD TV was a 1990 Sony 27".
Hehe, ya probably no component then. My 99' Panasonic had one though ;)
