View Full Version : Signal Strength Posting Tool
As we all know posting signal strengths is usually the core of most troubleshooting, but following the right layout can be a bit of a pain. I had this idea to try and simplify posting your signal strengths and have finally gone ahead and put it into functioning order.
So, I have created the Directv Satellite Signal Strength Collector that has a text box layout you fill in, then hit submit and it provides you with a text layout filled in with the strengths you entered that you can copy and paste onto the forum here!
Tip: Use the Tab key to move from one field to the next without having to use the mouse. You can tab through all the fields ;)
To access this tool, go to http://signal.dvrdns.org
It looks simple, but I did spend quite a bit of time making it. So let me know what you think!

Looks great
Thanks Grentz!
This will be helpful for everybody from time to time. Great idea
Looks great, but some comments/issues.
Based on using it with my HR21-200 (connected via SWM8 to Slimline 5-LNB)
1. 99s and 99c were reversed. On my HR, 99c comes first, then 99s.
2. 99c I have 2 transponders you don't allow for, 13 and 14.
3. 103c You allow for 2 transponders I don't have, 17 and 22.
4. You might want to indicate that 99s and 103s are very slow to appear.
5. Would it be worth adding the SWM fields? (1-9, rest n/a)
Would you object if I (and others) reference your tool on the DirecTV forums?

Thanks for the feedback. I based it on one of the templates someone else had posted, so I will work on fixing those errors you mentioned. I might pull up my readings as well and look at what is there.
Please do reference it, that is what it is for. ;)
EDIT: I have updated the URL to http://signal.dvrdns.org/ Please use this one instead as it allows me to change the actual location if need be without having to change the URL you guys link to (it is on a free hosting service right now so as not to tie up any resources on my other webserver).

Guys who has 72.5W satellite in your setup - please post a screenshot of your signal level screen from the sat !
ANy chance to add 72.5W ?
I know 72.5 only uses even numbered transponders, but I don't recall which ones are actually used. Problem with 72.5 is that it will be going away sometime this year so I'm not sure how much value there would be in adding it. But for those that still rely on it, I guess it's as important as any other satellite.

Grentz,
Thanks for the nice tool and brief description of the main purpose for each of the satellites.
Here are my readings from an HR20 DVR located just south of Reno, NV (Slimline 5 antenna). This receiver is working properly on all my local and satellite SD and HD channels.
However, I am having trouble with another DVR (HR21) located in another room; it has very similar signal strengths. The HR21 is receiving all local SD and HD and all satellite SD signals correctly, but is missing about 50% of the 266-362 HD channels and about 50% of the 501-552 HD channels. Prior to mid-December, the HR21 had been working well to receive all of these now missing HD channels for the previous 10 months. It seems to be a polarity switching issue, probably due to marginal voltage levels at the antenna location.
I suspect I will need an inline amp on the HR21's signal input or at its connection to the WB68 passive multiswitch, as my overall cable lengths appear to be right at the maximum working lengths. I may need to switch over to an SWM installation, which was not available at the time of my original installation in early October 2007. In some recent troubleshooting efforts to get my HR21 fully operational again, DTV thought that my HR21 DVR might be going bad. The HR22-100 they sent me did not receive ANY HD channels, so my HR21 is back on-line, albeit with a few missing HDchannels...

Grentz- Great Job on the page. It could be more helpful to add a section to input the receiver, state, and local DMA. As this would help in determining a problem.
If you did this in XML format can you create an access database to keep track of trends?
Just a thought.

You can just use either one and delete the extra fields if you like.
I opted not to add those as options as each additional page adds a lot more code and it is easy enough to delete the extras.

Ok, so after having issues with my HR20-700 I have been going back and forward with D* which culminated in an installer out today who replaced with an HR22-100 and replaced my old 5LNB KA/KU dish with one of the new slimlines as although the HR20-700 picked up all channels fine the HR22 could not pickup HD for some reason. So after the new install sure enough I could now pickup all HD channels again but I think I’m seeing worse picture quality than before with more artifacting or pixelization in the background. Being in the production industry I have an eye for detail which can be my downfall but I pulled my strengths and threw them below to see if anyone can see an issue.
Maybe the HR22 does not have as good PQ as the 20-700 just seems weird I never noticed this before and then today after the install I start to notice.
I really just need to know if I have been screwed over and need to get D* re-engaged again (4th time in 2 weeks so far).
Any help is greatly appreciated

Maybe I'm going crazy but hopefully you guys will find something if there is something in my strengths. Concerned that my 103 c seems low

I was just curious some of my signal strengths are in the 50s but most seem OK. Is that bad or doesn't it matter for them in my area? I live in northern lower Michigan. I don't notice any problems unless there's a real hard downpour or when a very light layer of snow gets on the dish. The dish pole does move around a little bit but doesn't seem to cut out in when its real windy.
Also as a side note/suggestion I am not sure if thats how its suppose to be or if its a typo. Under the 99º section it has 6 instead of the 16 that are open to type in. Just thought I would mention it :). otherwise a great tool I just figured id post my signals just for a reason so use it
:eek2: The signal strength text box is too small for iPod/iPhone (maybe iPad too?) and does not show three digit value of 100 no matter if the screen is pinched larger!
Also, my system also has a 119 (B) with values like:
17-24 x x x x x 94 95 x
25-32 78 96 97 97 96 98 82 98
