View Full Version : HR21 locks up on one wall connection only
I have a Slimline dish with 2 cables routed to my computer room and 2 cables routed to my family room. My family room HR21 started locking up about 3 months ago and requires a red button reset about 3 times a week. So I swapped out with the HR21 from my computer room to isolate the problem. Now, the problem persists in the family room with the new HR21, and the original HR21 does not lock up in the computer room. The problem appears to be with the cabling, not the HR21.
What can cause these HR21 lockups in the cabling? I want to try a self repair rather than paying for a service call.
It sure does point to the location, good troubleshooting.
Check both coax leads as far out as you can. Disconnect all connections, inspect, clean, and re-connect. Check at the DVR, at the wall plate if there is one (both sides of it), at the ground block, etc.
Also check AC power. Is there anything on that circuit breaker that could be causing a problem? Heavy load when a motor starts for example? A temporary check could be to run the DVR from a different circuit using an extension cord for a few days to see if the problem persists.

Do you have BBCs connected, and if so, did those go with the HR21s, or did you leave them connected to the cables in the same places where they were? If you left them where they were, you may want to switch the BBCs and see if the problem follows one of them. May be easier to check that before attacking the cables - epsecially if it is a BBC.
Sounds like you're on the right track, though.

I had problems with lockups on my living room HR20-700 and it was due to a loose coax crimp connector. I'd definitely inspect every connection. Specifically, make sure they are tight and look at the inside to make sure none of the grounding braid is visible. The white foam core surrounding the center conductor should be clean and tight inside the connector.
