hey John - current TP 12 is "non-spot" or a "spot" TP?

JohnH
05-14-03, 04:30 PM
As mentioned above they are ConUS(non-spot)

Darkman
05-14-03, 04:39 PM
I see - thanks..

What does "ConUS" abbriviation stand for then?

And why last couple of Local markets are "non-spots" - any idea/thought?

CONtinental (or CONtiguous) United States (ConUS).

See ya
Tony

JohnH

No room on those spots, probably.

Darkman
05-14-03, 04:49 PM
Ah OK - it means that TP is all over the ConUS then :) (and therefore is not a Spot)

WB 20 is apparently quite proud they are on DirecTV.

If they intend to offer many of the announced locals on 110 conus beams, that would appear to rule out the possibility of Hdnet at 110.

HDNET could almost fit in the space freed up by the rumored move of Dallas Channels to Spotbeam. If they want to put HDNET and HDNET Movies at 110, they will find room without much difficulty.

It should be noted that some of these recent locals additions are on transponders which have core programming. They have not done that in the past.

I hope these new local markets going on the conus birds on 110 is only temporary, if their is not room on the spotbeams then E* should have waited for 105 and 121 for these markets or require a SuperDish now so that these locals can easily be re-located to 105 or 121 later. 110 conus TP's should not be used for locals on a permanent basis because it will use up any space for future National channels, SDTV or HDTV.

I find it very odd that Dish put some ot the Spanish Language channels on the Conus transponders that have the poorest receive signal levels in Spanish speaking Puerto Rico and then put completely unconnected locals on a transponder that has an excellent receive signal level in Puerto Rico. Just does not make sense.

People in Knoxville's locals market - check with Dishnetwork on them... - they could be available to Subscribers now or tomorrow...

Why is most of Lexington on Conus, except WTVQ-ABC on spot
beam? HD Net could go here on 110.

JohnH

No more room on the spotbeam.

If they want to put HD NET on 110 they will find room.

I wonder what they are going to do with the LIL on CONUS. I hope they have a plan to move them eventually. I would much rather see them used for HDTV than locals.

I just looked--they are available to subs. I don't know exactly when that happened, but they are now.

I partly agree with you, HD belongs on 105 not 110. New SD National channel additions belong on 110, where more of us would benefit, HD will continue to be a luxury item for several more years.
Locals that can not fit on a 110 or 119 spotbeam belong on 105 or 121 and not on 110 conus.

The problem with putting HD at 105 is that is a very weak satellite. Probably too weak to run HDTV until it is replaced sometime next year. If they are serious about HDNET, ESPN, etc they will have to use 110.

New ideal plan:
Buy R/L DBS

Move Rainbow-1 to 119, it is more powerful and could increase channel resolution by cutting down on error correction. Move E7 to 110 and build a third uplink center. Then they could have 10 spot frequencies on 110 (E7 and E8 both use 5). R-1 has 22 spots (as opposed to about 15 on E7 & E8). With R-1 working with E7 & E8 they could get most the LIL for top 150 markets on 119/110. Move all the international to 148/61.5 since they would have 32/30 transponders on each satellite. Then use 105 for national HDTV (when it gets its new satellite) and 121 for LIL HDTV (when it is launched). A couple of years from now launch a spot beam satellite for 121 to expand past top 10 markets to 20 or 30.

If you are correct that the current satellite at 105 is too week for HDTV, then I would have no problem with HDTV channels going to 110 until the new 105 bird is launched, in the mean time a SuperDish would still need to be sold to all new HDTV subs for a seamless transition to 105 once the new bird is ready. The same goes for new local markets that are placed on 110 conus, they too should require a SuperDish upgrade to be ready for a 105 or 121 migration when new birds are ready.

I agree here if this would work, but according to some highly respected posters on this board, this may mot be possible because the spotbeams are more sensitive then conus birds are and may not be easily re-aimed for a different orbital location, maby if Dan Collins or others could clear this up. If this R bird can not be relocated then it could be used for HDTV locals from the Eastern half of the country and perhaps another spotbeam bird could be placed at 148 for HDTV locals for the Western half of the country. If E* purchased Rainbows satellite and TP's at 61.5 and added a spotbeam bird at 148, E* could do a sizable number of HDTV locals and should have enough bandwidth at 61.5/148/157 left over to leave current International channels alone and only place new International channels at 121 and new local markets at 105 and 121.
