View Full Version : 4700 Upgrade
Got the upgrade yesterday. My 4700 was purchased
in May 1999. It works pretty well, but the weather
on 9500 takes about 15-30 seconds to display. The
guide is better.
Congratulations! Only a year after your upgrade was promised this time around. Does your 4700 now operate as a 4900?
That's cool! Kind of wish I still had my 4700 (I sold it last year). Do you now have the ability to browse the program guide while watching satellite in a PIP window?
The system info now says it is a 4900 (upgraded)
receiver. The PIP function is nice, but there are
times when it is blank if the receiver is downloading
guide information.

I got my upgrade on 1/22/02.
Problems encountered.
Guide and menu items colors seem too bright, which makes it hard to read the lettering.
I do not like the blue squares on each end of the channel and browse banners. I would prefer a lighter shade to even the transparent banners that we had before.
Worst of all the Picture in the Guide is very poor. too dark of a picture. too slow to load
Have had to wait up to 12 and 1/2 minutes at a time to obtain the picture in guide. That is lame.
Having to wait extended lengths of time is ridiculous.
Normally when things get worse we call it a DOWNGRADE
ECHOSTAR calls it an upgrade????? what the he**
I've found that if you don't do anything in the guide when you first goto it the PIP comes up faster, while if you move around in the guide it takes much longer. My 301 has the same issues, so I'm assuming it is a general design issue. The only way around it in the E* world is the 501 where since the guide is on the hard drive no problem with PIP.
I wonder how much space the guide would take to cache into memory. I'm sure it could be designed to to cache (unless rebooted) into memory, but I bet the E* designers are under orders to keep production costs down. That additional memory would be miniscule in cost, but what do I know :D
