Just received a new HR22 and I'd like to move my other HR20 & R15 to different rooms. But would like the recordings to basically stay where they are:

HR20 --> HR 22
R15 --> HR 20

The R15 is currently my 'whole house' DVR then I will move to a bedroom. The HR20 will become my whole house unit and I can run the HDMI's through a multi repeater & cat5 extenders..

Just looking for a way to keep some peace in the house so I can do this:)

thx!

Not very likely as there are Digital Rights Management issues that DTV has to adhere to, other wise the movie/TV industry will be on them with a lawsuit faster than you could do a power off and shut down.

I thought TiVO has some way of doing this.. It was manual but it worked.. Using some Tools CD and booting up your PC in a different OS.. Seems like they could make a kit that allows for transfer between your registered units (and only yours) in your home and keep the people happy! \

just a thought

My Tivo unit has a "Deleted" folder, which whenever you delete a recording, it automatically goes to the deleted folder. Then if you deleted it by mistake you can restore it from the deleted folder. It automatically deletes files from this folder as space is needed for new recordings. There was some mention last year about DirecTv doing the same with their DVR's but so far, nothing has developed.

I'd say the possibility is there, but I have heard nothing about being able to do this.

The HRs encode their Receiver ID on all the recordings, so even if you were to move the data (say, via an eSATA drive), they would not be playable on the new machine. Recordings are permanently married to the machine that made them.

Sure would be nice if the DirecTV DVRs had it. ;)

A migration system would be great! Connect your DVRs to each other by the USB or Ethernet ports then select a command in the menu that transfers the recordings, links them to the new unit (re-authorizes them somehow) and then deletes them from the old unit. The deleting step would keep the TV/Movie industry from freakin out about the ability to "copy" the recordings. This feature would makes hardware upgrades more user friendly, so I can't believe DirecTV has figured out a way to do it yet.

Apple has just such a tool, when you start up a new Mac for the first time it asks if you have an old Mac, if you answer yes then all you do is hook up a Firewire cable all your files, applications and settings are copied over from the old computer to the shiny new one.

I'm pretty sure that this is the right answer to the question.

I'm pretty sure that this is the right answer to the question.Given that at least one of the competitors offers an archive feature, I'm not sure how much water this argument holds.

They chose not to get serious about the remarkably similar (and publicly announced) Directv2Go feature so I'd guess that they've decided it isn't something they want to mess with.

While I agree that DRM has something to do with it. I believe that there has to be some way that the content can be bound to account/receiver, rather than just receiver.

Is it "simple"? probably not.
Is it possible...? eight ball says - most likely
Does DirecTV want to invest the money and fight potential DRM violation cases to develop it? i.e. is there a business case that supports it - snowball, meet hell

I would even take the option to backup and migrate your season passes / scheduled recordings to a flash drive or something. That way if a box craps out, I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of setting up everything again.

That's an item on the wishlist. It's in section 6 - New Features

Ability to backup your HR20 settings and/or SERIES LINKS via network or USB drive.

If you haven't participated, please check it out and vote for your favorite features (link in my .sig below).

I had a CSR tell me yesterday that the recordings could be moved from one receiver to another. We were talking about some problems I'm having with an HR21 and the replacement option came up. I expressed to him I didn't want to lose my recordings. He said go to directv.com and then the tech forums and there it was explained how to do the move from one to the other. I was pretty sure this wasn't true, unless something had just recently been changed. I didn't waste any time looking for that thread, but I did find it rather funny that he would tell me that. News like that would make the front page of the newspapers.

Huh. Add this to the list of clueless comments by a D* CSR.

Definitely can't be done .. well, technically I think it can but you will not be able to view the content. What the CSR was likely thinking about is moving the content from one HDD to another and then placing it into the same DVR.

Maybe so, but we were talking about him sending me a replacement dvr and that I could copy my recordings on to the replacement. He acted like that was common knowledge. Just go to the tech forums and they explain how to do it. I didn't question what he said, I just let it go.

Not saying he's right .. just pointing out where the confusion probably came from.

I believe this is the link that you are looking for:http://forums.directv.com/pe/action/forums/displaythread?channelID=1&portalPageId=1002&rootPostID=10466011

The answer appears to be "no".

So in other words .. "ditto" :rolleyes:I see an obvious disinterest, but it almost certainly isn't based on legality as was suggested in the previous post.

has the "deleted shows folder" ranked high on the wish list ?
