Here is some information on the New Dish Network PVR721.

This information comes from TWICE Magazine (1/21/2002 Edition) on Page 20

... EchoStar introduced its DISH PVR721 Home Entertainment Gateway -- a combination DISH Network satellite receiver, hard drive video recorder and interactive TV-Inernet access device. The unit was slated to ship in the first quarter at a $499 suggested retail, and includes a massive 160GB hard drive to store television programs as well as information and content downloaded from the Internet over its dual USB connectors. Echostar will not charge a subscription fee for the DVR services.

Users and attach digital cameras to the USB port to store images and play them back on a television screen. Additionally PC Printers can be attached to the 721 to make color prints of Digital still shots or freeze frame video pictures. The ports will also connect with high-speed broadband modems, including those used by the Starband satellite service or DSL services to access the internet to download music and video programming. A jukebox application will enable storage for files to CD-R/RW discs using a connected USB-CD burner. For those without broadband access, the DISH PVR721 incorporates a 56.K V.90 dialup modem.

EchoStar also demonstrated here (CES Show) a next generation PVR that will record HDTV programming. It is tentatively slated for a late 2002 or early 2003 introduction.

Very nice, I'll probably get one although I haven't made a preorder yet.....this leads to a couple questions.

1.Can I use my existing internet provider for use with the 721 56k modem?

2.For instance....With the amount of preorders that Dish Depot has , will they be able to get ahold of that many PVR's when the 721 is released or would I be better off and buy from Dish Network?

You should be able to use your own ISP with the 721, however with that being said their "may" be a charge to use this feature if you not using a Dish Network perfered ISP. (This was something mentioned in one of the Chats real quickly)

As for Dish Depot I know I am one of the first 10 people who ordered. :D When the 6000's came out Dish Depot did not have enough units to ship to everyone but after making a huge public stink on how lousy Dish Networks distibution is he got a large shipment and was able to fill all orders in a few weeks. (I got my 6000 from them)

Since the MSRP is $499, will there be any drop in the 501 or 508 prices?

The 721 sounds very cool. Glad I got a 4 port router. Should be easy to plug that baby into my broadband connection along with the other computers. Home networking is the coolest thing since sliced bread.

Steve,I really don't know Dish Networks history, But I would think the 501 price might drop some.

Dish drop prices?!? Yeah right...that'll happen just as soon as IFC/WE get split...oh wait, bad example :) I doubt we'll see serious price drops on the 501. What I really want to see (and buy) is a HD-PVR. I love HD television, but really miss timeshifting so I can watch at my convenience rather than the networks'.

This init is what is needed to answer the DirecTivo product. I am waiting impatiently for its availabilty. I want one and already promised my son-in-law one as a Christmas present.

Now when you get the pink screen of death, you'll lose tv, internet, and possibly your home network!

LOL....:rollin:
markdl doesn't seem to think Dish Network will drop the price !!.......hehe.....probably not.

I was trying to be optomistic about it.
