InDirectv sent me a R22-200 to replace an old Hughes SD DVR-40. I am using it on an Envision A20E221 SD LCD. Am I supposed to beleive their bs that the vertical pillaring and letterboxing on every channel, effectively reducing the viewing area on this 20" LCD by about a third, is a problem with my tv and has nothing to do with the DVR? The Hughes, the R10 and my JVC N50BK DVD player do not have this problem. The LCD "has a native resolution of 800x600, fully resolves 480i SD television, as well as progressive-scan (480p) DVD program material."
The #@*^% at DTV kept telling me the problem is my tv not their DVR.

From a quick lookup of the specks on your tv's model; it looks to be a 4:3 aspect ratio set.
Did you set the R22 to 4:3 in the setup menu?
Since I have a H2x series HD DVR and not the R22 I'm not sure if this applies; however, in the setup menu on the hd dvr units thetre is also a setting for "streatch, pillar box, crop etc. If you have that selection, set it to "stretch" in order to fill the entire screen.
Sometimes it boils down to not reading the instructional manual rather then blaiming the equipment as being a POS...
If the specs I found by doing a quick search on the net are incorrect and your set is indeed a 16:9 aspect ratio type, then you can also press the picture format aka aspect ratio button on the tv's remote to do simular reformating of the picture to fill your screen.

HD resolutions are disabled on the R22. However you can set you receiver to 4:3 and you should be ok...

Yoda-DBSguy and LOCODUDE-You are correct. I went into setup and changed the aspect ratio to 4:3 and voilla! That was the first thing I did last night before I even hung up the phone with DTV. I swear the "display" option was unavailable. Now I just spent an hour typing a rant about it and what Envision said, posted it and checked it one more time after I reread what you said. Anybody got a gun? Just kill me. :bang Is that something it downloaded/updated in the hours since?
It wasnt there, I swear... :eek2:

Older software versions (like the original one) did not give access to that option, so maybe you had one that sat in the wharehouse and was never installed.

The option was not there at first but then it was later. Did it update itself overnight?

It could have, check the last software update, I think if you hold the INFO button down it brings up a screen and on it somewhere it indicates the last software update.

What everyone forgot to point out is that before the option to choose 4:3 or 16:9 on the R22 was opened up so customers could choose what they wanted it defaulted to 4:3 so whether your R22 got an upgrade or not shouldn't have been an issue.

OK, but read my post. The picture was pillared and letterboxed when first set up. There was no 4:3/16:9 choice available. The next day it was available and setting it to 4:3 fixed the problem.
