I've been experiencing the exact same issue -- and audio BRRR every 10 seconds or so on KGO-HD via D*
I got through to D*'s advanced tech support and they're notifying broadcasting about the issue.
I had an identical periodic audio glitch a couple of years ago, also on KGO via D* The current problem started last week when they installed a new HR22 DVR in place of my HR10.

This problem was worse than I had ever experienced during the Rose Bowl. But then, Brent Musberger is the most annoying thing in all of sports broadcasting, and he made me forget about the brrrrrrpppps.
I watched the Rose Bowl and Musberger was the only annoying thing I noticed. I am not in a position to get KGO OTA, I get the others fine. I would be curious to find out if this condition also exists OTA as well as D*.
At times on various stations I'll get a BRRR, a picture freeze and pixilaztion then back to normal. Its almost like there is a loss of synchronization of the signal.
I spoke with D*'s higher level techs about this problem.
The tech composed an email to their broadcast unit and called me back the next day with a report. Apparently, shortly after they "reported it to broadcast" they received a reply that it had just been fixed -- and indeed by evening the periodic BRRR was gone. The tech couldn't tell me whether it was KGO that fixed it or D*'s broadcast unit.
Here's the thing: If audio distortion on a particular station ever happens again, call D's tech support. Tell them that this has happened before and that "it's been determined to be a broadcast problem and they should report it to broadcast." If they give you a song and dance, ask for a supervisor.
Apparently this audio distortion bug is a known issue and can be fixed when reported.
This problem has been going on for over a year+ on KGO-7 .... I reported it to their engineers like 4 months ago. They are clearly unable to fix this. This was introduced with the MPEG4s LILs and seems to affect their station the worst of all -- for whatever reason. (I never had this issue until I installed the H20-100 & H20-700 - to get the MPEG4s required by D*.) It is very very annoying, I agree. In fact because of this we purposely do not watch KGO unless there is something that is a MUST that I want to see.

There's been an annoying audio BRRRR (about every 10 seconds) on ABC 7 (KGO) San Francisco (via D*).
It's been lurking there for a couple of months, but now it's grown bad enough to complain.
(HR20-700, 0x0250 -- but has been doing it on a variety of CEs)It would be useful if users having problems with audio stutters and macroblocking/pixelation would say whether they are using a DVR and, if so, whether they are using an esata drive. After over a year of using my esata drive and occasionally switching back the internal HR20 drive, these problems seem to occur more frequently when using the esata. I encounter them most frequently on the CBS and ABC locals but they sometimes occur on many other channels as well. Also, they occur when viewing the channels either OTA (via the DVR) and via D*.

Does anyone know what's going on with KMTP? They have been off the air for a couple weeks. (Sorry if this isn't the right thread but it's the closest I could find)

Just a heads up that there will be some changes to some local channels tomorrow due to stations declining Must Carry or opting in for Must Carry.
This means a handful of stations will be removed on January 1, 2009.
Looks like KMTP declined the "Must Carry" option.
I have btoh a DVR and non-DVR unit .. this "brrrrr" issue happens on both of them. And largely on KGO-7 .... has been going on for a loooong time. Too LONG IMHO.

Looks like KMTP declined the "Must Carry" option.KMTP is not just off D*, it is not broadcasting on 32-1. When you tune to 32-1 OTA or via D* there is a still image and the words "KMTP Digital 33". The D* guide continues to list the channel.

Interesting. You could try calling them. http://www.kmtp.tv/ has their phone number listed.

Don't usually get any pixelation ... just the intermittent "brrrrrrr" .. and yes, I get them on both units.
PS - FOX really SUCKS this morning (10:20 AM) -- watching the NFL playoffs on my H20-100 .... getting intermittent drops and 'brrrrrrrr's. So bad that the channel went totally black for a few seconds...
Something is going on at Sutro Tower ..... it seems...

The "brrrrr" happens on BOTH, as I mentioned. We really don't get much pixelation .. that seems to come and go - which I tend to blame more on the actual Broadcast or maybe work they're doing at Sutro Tower from time to time ... since when we DO experience that, it is usually a very clear day, so no other explanation for it.

For whatever reason, KPIX 5 is now showing a lot of pixelation on live sports events. This issue started during the NCAA tournament, and it got progressively worse week by week. Lots of macroblocking around the players in motion, and pixel shifting in the background. It was also noticeable when I watched the KPIX feed at a sports bar with Directv. I also have an OTA antenna hooked up for comparison, and this was not an issue originating from the TV station.
I have previous college basketball games from earlier in the season recorded on the DVR (HR22) that don't exhibit any pixelation whatsoever. Before, KPIX was one of the best local broadcast channels, and now it has to be one of the worst.
Also, beginning last weekend, I began noticing some of the same issues cropping up when watching the Stanley Cup playoffs on KNTV 11. As with KPIX, this was another station with a very clean feed until this degradation began showing up.
KGO 7 just seems to have a noisy signal, but it also looks noisy on the OTA antenna.

BRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrr!
KTVU-DT (Fox) Channel 2; Came home from vacation to see that audio and video mismatched; constant audio "stutter" every 5-10 seconds. No other DMAs affected.
This is NOT an OTA signal.

Been a few months, and it seems that the picture quality on KGO, KPIX, and KNTV remains mediocre. Still getting a lot of pixel shifting and macroblocking during live sports broadcasts.
Does anybody have any suggestions about who I should contact at Directv about this? (I'm already at my wits end about the Versus dispute, which forced me to look elsewhere to watch the Cal-Stanford game despite the fact that I pay extra for the sports package).

Fox HD (Channel 2 KTVR) is way freaky right now .. Looks to be in the transcoding, but it could be from the source (KTVU).
Here's a video: http://www.camera3.org/download/VID00076.MP4 (33 MB)
On both 2 hour season premier episodes of 24, Sunday and Monday night, there was a significant glitch in video and audio that lasted for a few seconds.
The video would freeze then advance a frame or two then come back to normal. Meanwhile the audio would disappear, then I'd hear a noise burst sort of like a jackhammer, then it would come back.
I've seen threads on transcoding issues with local channels. Could this be that?
My signal's OK - I actually just had the dish replaced and signal levels are all high 80's or above.

I saw this as well happened once or twice each night.

I saw that happen as well.
But, over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a huge improvement in the picture quality for the local HDs in general. The pixel shifting and macroblocking that I'd seen on the local channels since last March seems to have been resolved.

Has anybody noticed that NBC, Ch 11, has been out all day? I woke up at
6am and it was already giving the "no need to call us message". As of this
minute, 1:30pm, its still out. Anybody know whats going on? Is this local or
across the nation??
Local issue, KNTV is coming in fine on Comcast. Maybe something wrong with the fiber link connection.

I dont know, but its still out as of this moment. That is a long time for
one channel to be dead. Especially since its a major network!!
Maybe I should post this in the gen disc forum??
