I assume there is no way, but ...... where my HR20 is located it requires RF mode and my Slingbox only uses IR. How can I get the IR slingbox output to control an RF HR20 (they are both in the same place)? Is there some device to convert the Slingbox I/R output to RF to control the HR20 which is set to RF?
At this point sadly there is no way. That is why many of us wish you could have a hybrid RF/IR mode.
You could use a third party RF remote like the Harmony 890 or some of the Phillips Prontos (that is what I use). They have an RF/IR bridge that sits with the receiver and sends the RF output from their remote to the receiver via IR.

I have no specific knowledge or experience to back this up, but....
It might be possible, with enough knowledge and experience (natch), to capture the output of the IR blaster port on the Slingbox, interpret the commands, and send the corresponding serial control to the HR2x box via the USB port.
The USB port CAN be used to change channels and perform other functions, though the command structure is not well documented outside D*. Hit up Google and you might be able to piece together enough information to make it useful.
Of course, this assumes that you want to go through the effort and put out the expense and deal with the inherent complexity of using an intermediate IR/RF/Control command interpreter between the Slingbox and HR2x box.
I faced a similar hurdle at one point and decided it wasn't worth it. My ultimate solution was to simply switch back to IR on the HR20 with the Slingbox attached.

Can't you just keep the HR20 on IR and use an IR extender?

Duhhhh  I ordered one of those UFO shaped IR extenders to see what happens. I hear they get flakey at times but for $35 from Amazon it's worth a shot assuming they work with the DirecTV remote. .Can't you just keep the HR20 on IR and use an IR extender?

Did you order THIS ONE (http://www.amazon.com/Next-Generation-Remote-Control-Extender/dp/B000C1Z0HA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1235703585&sr=8-1)?
If so, it works great and works with the D* receivers.
