My Dishplayer finally appeared to have died a few weeks ago so I called up Customer Service and ended with (I think it was called) advanced tech support. They had me run through a few things and finally concluded that my hardrive had gone bad and wanted to issue an RMA to have it fixed or replaced. I told the CSR that I would rather fix it myself... I knew how to replace the hardrive since I had upgraded it to a 40 gig when I first bought it anyway. She could not confirm nor deny if the software was still being spooled from the satellites. She then offered the 508 for $149.00 to me and after thinking about it I figured it was a good deal especially if I could get the Dishplayer working again then I could sell it on Ebay or something and probably make money on the deal.
I got my 508 last week and got it running. Overall I liked my dishplayer better mainly because of the guide and the search functions. the 508 seems fairly stable but I see that a quite a few people have had some problems. One of the nicest differences that I love is the 508 is soooo much quieter than the 7100. Even if the guide isn't as good as the 7100 it will work out better because I have a 921 on order and the 508 unit will be moved to my bedroom and replace my 4000, something that I would not have done with the 7100 because of the noise factor.
BTW after I got off the phone with the CSR I unplugged my 7100 for a few hours, when I plugged it back in it worked just fine. Guess you will see it on Ebay soon.
Sorry for being a little long winded but I wanted to share what I thought was a fairly positive experience with Dish. I see a lot of people complaining about them but I really have never had a problem. The first CSR I spoke to realized that she could not help me and immediately sent me to someone that could. I know some would expect to get a free replacement but I have had the 7100 since almost the day they came out and it has worked pretty well - the regular bugs that everyone has seen but I still loved it. Once you have had a pvr you can no longer go back to a VCR.
