I got an HR20-700 - running 0x2cb, since Wed 2/11/09
For the past 18 months, I've had an external eSATA 500Gb disk attached
and all has been well. About a week ago, the menus started getting
really slow, previous recordings that were fine, now play really jerky
with lots of audio drop outs.

Also, if I'm watching a show, real-time, then back it up say 30 to 45 minutes,
the resulting playback is jerky, audio cuts out. If I fast-forward back to real time, it will resync in about 120 seconds and all is OK.

I just reset the HR20 and disconnected the external eSATA, now it's running
on the internal drive that hasn't been used in 18 months.

The performance is now back to normal, menus are snappy an I can backup
and replay things without issue.

So.... I've got a failing disk drive. But it's not dead yet, just almost.

IS THERE A WAY to move my recordings from this disk to another and then
plug the new drive in the the HR20-700 and have it play them?

Please help. Thank you!

Have you tried power cycling the drive? There is no way to move recordings from one drive to another.

There is a long thread here somewhere that outlines the steps to replace a hard drive and transfer the recordings. If you are happy with the 500GB capacity, then you may be able to just clone the drive using any number of utilities.

It can be done, check this thread out:

Its actually very easy. The instructions are very specific though. Attach new drive to DVR so it formats it correctly and then do the graceful reboot/disconnect drive, then attach both drives to your PC, boot it up using the GParted live CD, type some magic command lines, and wait.
