View Full Version : Two SWM or not two SWM

I recently relocated from IL to FL. I had (2) HR20s, (2) H20s and a R15 as my pre-move setup. I added a HR22 between the date I setup the movers’ connection and the actual install date. DTV had to place the HR22 on a different install, no big deal. This past Monday MasTec came out and the installer realized that it would be easier to use SWM instead of doing 4 wall fishes using a 6x8. The installer replaced the R15 with a R22 (so it would work with SWM). Everything went smooth until Today.... MasTec came out to install the HR22 and it failed to work. The second installer was prepared to put up a second 6x8 until he realized that I had SWM. I suggested putting two SWMs together with a SWM-E2. He called the supervisor and his super told him there was no such part. I showed the non-existent part to the tech at SolidSignal. The supervisor advised the tech to remove the SWM system, install (2) 6x8 and do the wall fishes tonight or look for another job. I was shocked to hear that come out of his supervisor. I advised the tech that was not acceptable and a simple part would resolve the issue without $200+ in wall fishes and take a hell of a lot less time. This situation is clearly out of the hands of the tech. I advised the tech to unplug the (2) H20s to get the HR22 working and that I would contact DTV and MasTec regarding this situation. What happened to customer service?

It sounds like you had 8 tuners already before the installer came out to install a HR22, right? You can't add more than 8 tuners to a SWM dish installation.

Oh, and a SWM-E2 is used with a SWM-8 multiswitch. You had a SWM LNB install, not a SWM-8.

And if you have a SWM-LNB, you can't use a WB68.

Yes I had 8 turners before the install of the HR22.

If I am understanding you correctly, I am left with 3 possible solutions.
Swap the LNB and add (2) 6x8s + 4 walls to fish
Swap the LNB and add (2) SWM-8 + SWM-E2
Drop two tuners to keep me at 8 tuners total
Any other solutions?

One more option, a second slimline with either a SWM LNB or a legacy LNB and any needed switches with dual lines to DVRs.

Just so you know:
- DirecTV doesn't supply SWM-8s, only SWM LNBs. SWM-8s are "buy it yourself" items.
- SWM devices support 8 tuners max.
- The SWM LNB has no way of being expanded beyond 8 tuners.
- Customers who need more than 8 tuners are normally converted to legacy systems per DirecTV policy.
The techs and HSP in this case are following policy as we would expect.
Between your post and Robert's, you have your available options. The pair of SWM-8s is going to be the easiest way to go, but also the most expensive. Note that the SWM-E2 is not required; it's just a "neat" but expensive way to split the signal for 2 SWMs. The more common, less expensive method is to use 4 power-passing splitters, rated to 2.25 GHz or better.
Good luck!

Actually, the SWM standalone switch will support 11 tuners, if you include the 3 legacy outputs; the op could use those on any of his receivers... ;)

As long as they didn't need/want Ka-lo channels.

Well, there should be no reason for an R22 to need those, which is one of his DVR's... ;)

Irrelevant; DirecTV won't be supplying a SWM8. We're talking SWM LNBs.

I was VERY aware of the difference, thank you - I DO actually install these things.
I was just trying to provide a simpler solution, so that the OP would NOT have to install another dish. And as YOU said YOURSELF, he could buy an SWM8 switch himself - so why would MY post NOT be relevant, thank you?

So did they or did they not leave you w/ a WB68? If they did or if you could get them to come back & hook everything up on a WB68, running single lines to your DVRs, let it go like that. Purchase a SWM8 & either run it parallel or cascade it w/ the WB68. Now you can run all of your IRDs w/ the H20s running off the WB68 (w/ BBCs) & all your DVRs running off the SWM8 w/ single lines. I think this would be the most cost effective solution.
