What a bummer. I was really expecting Clay to win. Quite frankly I don't thing Ruben has "star" quality. I bet after a few concerts Ruben will collapse from heat exhaustion. Clay has a better voice with a wider range.

I'm very dissapointed with the results this time around. On the bright side, I bet Clay will get a record contract and probably do better in the long run.

The show is almost over and I couldn't wait to see who won. All I can say is I would "buy" a Clay CD but I wouldn't even download a Ruben single for free.

Hard to believe it was that close.

Clay does have the better singing voice...but what a geek! This guy has Barry Manilow Jr. written all over him. And the way he batted those eyes EVERY time someone complimented him...UGH...he should have lost for that reason alone!

I mean if you were in a record store and had the choice between a Clay Aiken CD or a Rueben Studdard CD which would you buy?

RUEBEN!

Well you might be surprised to find out that you would have few people to fight off to buy your new "Ruben CD"

According to Amazon.com, the preorder list for new CD's last week had the Clay Aiken CD rated at the top of the chart. As in number (1) with a bullet.

The new "American Idol" Ruben Studdard CD was 386 on the preorder list.

I thought Ruben was a consistently better singer than Clay. Clay had his moments, but Ruben sang great nearly every time. I'm still not sure how he ended up in the bottom 2 that one week when Josh was clearly the worst. Ever since Clay's very first performance in the top 32 I didn't really care for his voice that much. I would have preferred to see Kimberly Locke in the top 2.

Hate to say it, but it's a racial thing. Sorry, but don't be blind to the truth.

Although I had little interest in this show, we all knew they had to pick Ruben to be "politically correct" :(

Actually it was all Florida's fault. A few of the senior citizens mistakenly voted for Kimberly Locke instead of Clay.....

If that's the best they can find, they may as well quit trying.

is it just me or did this years AI have almost NONE of the zip, fun and enthusiasm of last years?

I thought everyone in the top 7 were incredibly talented singers. I didn't play favorites. They both deserved to win the title. Who cares whether its a fat 6-4 black guy or a skinny 6-1 white guy. Its about their talent not their looks. They both will be millionaires, as well as some of the others in the competition. Good Luck to them. I enjoyed watching the show.

I agree there were some really talented people. It was fun to see them get better each week.
That said, I just can't help but feel like this competition was "manipulated" somehow from start to finish by the producers. Did anyone else notice that no matter how "pitchey" Ruben was night after night, Simon never blasted him the way he did others (especially Clay). Also did anyone else notice how Simon made rude comments on ALL the overweight females but never onced mentioned Rubens staggering size or told him he needed to loose a few pounds???

Some things just aren't adding up here me thinks.

One thing that really bothers me the most was the outcome. I sometimes wonder if there wasn't a racial issue involved like Frapp stated earlier in this thread. Can you imagine what would have happened if Clay won? We would have heard black people and fat people everywhere saying that the whole contest was a crock because Ruben never had a chance due to his color and weight. If the contest was rigged, FOX obviously wanted to be politically correct.

I know, this isn't the popular opinion. Just speculating a little.

Going into the final night, I decided that Ruben should win.  He was consistently better than Clay, night after night.  I liked both and will probably buy albums by both.  Just my opinion.

I also picked Ruben to win from the first time I say him. I thought Ruben first, Frenchie second, but we all know what happened there.

Maybe prejudice worked against Clay. I mean Ruben was a nice, decent, humble person while Clay was an arrogant, grandstanding camara whore. I don't know who was the better singer, but I would have voted for Ruben no matter what the talent differential was.

I hate to hear the racial speech every single time in these situations. When Ruben was in the final two to be booted earlier in the contest, remember that the situation was whoever received the least number of votes left the show. At that time, there were several people left. If I was voting, I would see Ruben as a lock and would have voted for someone else that I wanted to stay. Hence, Ruben wasn't being voted off, it was probably that his fans were just so sure he was getting past that round, they didn't put out the effort for him.

Wouldn't be the first time that a favorite player/team/etc needed a dose of reality to get over the hump and keep 100% focus. Just don't see the racism in this one. It's a singing contest for pete's sake.

I know it came up, but as far as I could tell, there was no evidence of it and I was putting forth what I thought was a legitimate reason that Ruben was in the bottom two that week. Since that situation wasnt votes cast against him (hence racially motivated 'no' votes cast against him), but rather lack of yes votes for him, how could the race card be used? To me, it was simply a matter that his fans were complacent due to the fact that they believed he was a shoo in.

To me, bringing up the race card in benign and unproven circumstances diminishes the validity when there are true problems. Like the boy that cried wolf, sooner or later people will stop listening when the need is highest. Most of us don't want that to happen.

That's my $.02.

Back to the overall topic, my wife is a native of Raleigh and she and her sister (both over 30) just went haywire when Clay lost. Personally, I think each are very talented singers and will find a niche that fits them. I think Clay will have the biggest impact immediately and that Ruben has the potential for a more long term career.

My prediction - Clay will be like Kelly, skyrocketing album sale immediately. I think both Clay and Kelly will then fall off the radar, especially as more "Idols" win the show. I think Ruben will not have the skyrocketing sales that Clay and Kelly will experience but will impact long term with steady consistent market with some upswings, especially with his first album.
