I've toyed with the idea, but losing ESPN, FX, USA, Spike and a few others would be VERY hard to take. So far, I'm sticking with the PLUS HD DVR equivalent I'm grandfathered into (Choice Plus?).

I may drop to Family after hockey season ends. I'll miss SciFi and BBCA, but that's about it.
I dropped to Family last week. Had to call to get HD added so I could watch local OTA in HD. All the DVR's would let me select was 480p. Could not add it online. The rep gave me the HD Extra Pack for free for six months. I was already was into two months of the three months free.
I live in a town house where cable is part of the maintenance fees and COX carries all of the HD channels I watch so I thought I would give them a try for awhile. Quality is not as good as DIRECTV but not bad.
If it weren't for the MLB Network, I could get by with the Family Pack.

I thought about it until I realized 80% of the channels I watch weren't in the family package.

Why would someone choose Family over Preferred Choice? A few extra dollars gets you an entire programming package with PC.

What's the package you get with the fillipine radio station? I forget but wasn't it almost the same as Choice? I would shut off my internet and phone and go down to 1 receiver and drop the protection plan and drop my TWC (expanded basic their digital is horrible) backup for bad weather days before I would drop Totoal Choice Plus.

There's an interesting play here to save money but still get a ton of channels.
Sub to the Preferred Choice international package for $19.99 a month. Also sub to the MYX a la carte Filipino music channel for $4.99 a month. I'm assuming this will satisfy the requirement to sub to at least one international service.
You end up with 121 channels for $25 a month. That beats the hell out of the 50 channels you get with Family for $30 a month. It's very close to the 150 channels you get with Choice for $56 a month.
Here are the Preferred Choice channels:
A&E
ABC Family
BBC America
Bloomberg
BYU TV
Cartoon Network
Cartoon Network (West)
Christian TV Network
Church Channel
CNBC
CNBC World
CNN
Comedy Central
C-Span
C-Span 2
Daystar
Discovery Channel
Disney Channel (E)

+69 music channels. You also get the HD versions of these channels if you sub to the HD package.
If the economic times get much worse I would think seriously about dropping down to this lineup.

Preferred Choice is actually $34.99 a month, only $19.99 if you are new subscriber. I currently have preferred Choice and have every channel I need and watch.
We didn't switch to Family, but did drop HD Extra (leaving us with Choice Plus). I think next step will be just dropping DirecTV completely. There's getting to be better and better options that cost less.

No. But you do with the Spanish language package "Familiar", which I believe is somewhere around $46/month.

As of march 4th, Familiar package is not available, it was replaced with Optimo Mas; which does not have RSNs.

So, you're stating what I posted is my opinion? Thanks for clarifying the obvious.
