I accidentally posted this over in the General Discussion forum. I guess it really belongs here...

Quick question...I have an install scheduled for tomorrow. I'm getting one HD DVR and one standard receiver, supposedly with the Slimline 5LNB. I just noticed on the D* website that it says the free installation includes:

* Up to 125 feet of RG-6 cable per receiver.
* Routing all cables to one TV through an exterior wall or from basement.
* Connecting one DIRECTV receiver and all previously connected equipment.
* For DVR installations, connecting two satellite cables to the DVR.

But does not include:

* Routing cables through more than one wall or fishing cables between walls.
* Any additional work to hide or camouflage cables/wiring.
* Installing additional receivers or routing system to more than one TV outlet.

When ordering, I was led to believe that my install would be free. I understood that wall fishing, extra cable and other "custom" work (pole mount, etc.) is not included, but thought that running cable to additional receivers on the order through an outside wall would all be included.

Is the tech going to charge me extra for running the cable and installing the standard receiver on the 2nd TV? If so, how much does this typically run?

Thanks.

The tech wouldn't be charging me to connect any additional DirecTV receivers.
I think you should be fine, unless the second room is not on an outside wall/or hard to run the coax to.

That second receiver will be installed at no charge.

That is to control customers who order one or two receivers as you did.......and then pull out a few more to be run all over the house.

You will be ok, both ordered receivers should go in with the FREE basic installation.

Up to 4 receivers HAVE to be installed for free. I always make my office warn the customer for custom fee for anything over 4 IRDs.

But what they most likely will want to do if there is not any coax to your locations is to run outside and then in through an exterior wall. If you have a crawl or attic they may be willing to use that. What they generally won't do is fish cable through walls and install it in a box. They are going to take the path of least resistance for the wiring. Anything above that will require you to negotiate with them. So I'd say look at the situation now and decide what you will accept and what you won't before they come.

Thanks. I figured I was okay, but hadn't really paid close attention to the "fine print" with regard to installation. I can see where there's a need for them to protect themselves by putting some kind of limit on the number of boxes.

As stated, free installation covers up to 4 receivers. The verbiage you are referring to is to protect the installer from having to do the following for free:

- connect additional receivers beyond the ones he is supplying, except on a Mover's Connection where those existing receivers are listed on the order and can be phyicially verified.

- backfeed receivers to secondary TVs (i.e., 1 receiver connected to more than 1 TV).

As Joe mentioned, we sometimes get a customer with old receivers, or receivers from someone else's account, who think they can pull them out and we'll connect them for free. It doesn't work that way. Besides, more than half the time those receivers are either leased and due to be returned, or have a balance on them and can't be transferred until it's paid.

Another reason why I shouldn't complain as much as I do working for a dealer. Only NIB IRDs. No refurbs or nasty bug ridden soda soaked boxes with missing cards.
