Can you hook an older, non-single wire capable, receiver directly to the outputs on the slimline 3lnb that has the 4 outputs? And still hook a newer single wire receiver to it on a differenty output at the same time?

If so how does it do that?

Or do you have to have the multiplexer with the legacy output?

Yes, the SlimLine 5 and 3-LNB dishes have four outputs. Any DirecTV Receiver, regardless of age, will work with those outputs. It's only the "Single Wire Multiswitch" (SWM) dish that requires newer Receivers and DVRs.

If you have a Slimline LNB with 4 outputs, then the switch inside the LNB is a legacy switch, not a SWM switch. In that case, you need to run a separate line to each tuner.

A SWM LNB only has a single connection, and does not support legacy receivers at all.

In the suggested scenario the single wire (SWM) capable receiver would not be operating in the single wire mode. That is, if that receiver were an HR21, two coaxes would need to be routed to the receiver to utilize both tuners.

Stated another way, a SWM LNB is only operational with SWM capable receivers. A non-SWM LNB can be used with SWM capable receivers, but the receivers will not be working in SWM mode.

I see. Bottom line the only way to run some single wire and some legacy is to have the multiplexer with the legacy output. Otherwise you're running all one way or the other.

Yes. I have a SWM-8 switch and it works great. I would recommend it to anyone, and it's a very easy DIY installation. As long as you don't have more than 3 legacy receivers. You can run the SWM-8 and WB68 in parallel though if you do have more than 3 legacy receivers.

It seems a little pricey.

Correct. I got mine for about $100 from ebay, which included the power inserter.

They've gotten a lot cheaper since I bought mine! Of course, only you can decide if it's worth it or not.
