View Full Version : How do you sort your PLAYLIST?
Curious if folks change the default PLAYLIST sort from "DATE (NEW)" to one of the others.
Please tell us which SORT order you most often use. TIA. /steve
Always "Title (A-Z)". I don't ever care when it aired, just what it is.

Date New for me.
None of the options are ideal but this works best.

Date (New) for me. My wife and I have been "discussing" trying to do by Alpha, but haven't pulled the trigger.

Old to new for me. I like to see my oldest series first and view series in order. I never sort any other way, except if I'm playing an entire folder.

I never sort any other way, except if I'm playing an entire folder. This makes a lot of sense, if it wasn't for the fact that some folks "archive" shows, especially now that we can use such large drives. Those older shows would all accumulate at the top of the list over time.
If there was a way I could "move" archived shows into a separate folder, this is the sort order I would probably use, because we typically like to watch the week's shows in the order they were recorded.

I flip flop between Date(New) and Alpha(A-Z). It really doesn't matter to me but Alpha(A-Z) does help me find things fast and comes in handy when you have a crapload of movies to sort thru.

I usually like mine alphabetically--they are all movies, not series episodes, so no reason to watch them in any particular order.

i just keep the date (new) default....again i like seeing what recently recorded on top.

I sort all of my DVR's playlist using A-Z. I hope some day a second sort by option is added for folders or at least folders to be sorted oldest to newest no matter how you sort your playlist.
[...]or at least folders to be sorted oldest to newest no matter how you sort your playlist.Big +1. Ideally, I'd like to see files in folders sorted by "first aired date". Otherwise, "Date (old)".
I'd also like to see Title (A-Z) sorted the same as TITLE SEARCHES, and per this Wish List request:
Ignore irrelevant words or punctuation ("Manual:", A, An, The, 'Til) when alphabetically sorting MY PLAYLIST.
IOW, "The Big Bang Theory" should be in the "B's" and not the "T's". :)
/steve
I wonder if more folks would choose a different sort method if they could make it "stick"? Anyone know if this capability is now a feature of the NR? TIA. /steve
I think most people would like to sort "new to old" and then "old to new" within the folders.
Unforntunately that option aint available.

The reason I said oldest to newest is so if you press play on the folder to play episodes back to back it will play them in order if you have more than one unwatched episode.

It's the genesis of this Wish List request:
Always sort shows within folders by date (old), even though the PLAYLIST may be sorted sorted differently. Sorting by "first aired date" would be ideal.

Always "Date (Newest)" for me, as I watch by date recorded. Newest as the top of the playlist, oldest at the bottom.

When you say watch by "date recorded", do you mean reverse chronological order? So last night's shows before Saturday night's shows? Or last Wednesday's shows before last Thursday's?
I ask because it goes to the question asked in Doug's poll (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=154351)... where would you like the cursor to be when you go to the PLAYLIST? At the top? Or where you last left off?

We have nothing to sort. We watch the recorded shows usally in a day or 2 and then delete them.

Always new to old.
I have no idea what night different shows record on, so I like to know what's recently recorded as there's some shows I want to watch right away (LOST & 24, for example). If I had it old to new, several days might go by before I realized they were in the list.
Same with alphabetical. I wouldn't know when newer shows recorded and since I have a 1TB drive on one of my units, there might be an archived movie (or two) that are always at the top that I'd need to skip past. With new to old, all my archived movies and shows are at the bottom.

Date (New). Not sure if that's the default or not. But it's the way I've done it since my first Tivo back in 2000 so it's the way we roll. :)
I always sort by date, newest on top. If it were possible to set two different sort orders for shows and episodes, then I would use A-Z for shows and date (newest first) for episodes.
The ability to retain sort order is technically available in the NR, but it is in the misc. options menu activated by the IAMANEDGECUTTER keyword, so I don't know if it counts as an NR feature or not...
The ability to retain sort order is technically available in the NR, but it is in the misc. options menu activated by the IAMANEDGECUTTER keyword, so I don't know if it counts as an NR feature or not...For the typical subscriber, that's as good as it NOT being available. IMO. As a result, average folks aren't really being given a chance to use anything other than "Date (new)", if that's their inclination.
Frankly, I would just make the last sort order "sticky". I think non-technical users would see that as "expected" behavior. IIRC, isn't that how TiVo did it on the HR10? /steve

100% agree.
I hate new to old layouts as they are too hard to find shows IMO. I watch things by show, not by what just aired.
Now, I do wish you could new to old within a shows folder, as I watch shows in order.

/steveSorry for any consusion if I was vague in my earlier reply ...
I always watch my oldest shows first, so I watch in the order they were recorded. However, I do like to see at the top of the list the programs that are currently recording, because when I see the red light I just tap LIST and see what's happening, without having to scroll.
So I like to see newest at the top, but I watch from the bottom up. How's that for different?! :p

Contrary to what you might think, I suspect you're speaking for a good % of the folks who voted "always on top" in Doug's poll. I'm sure many of those folks also like to watch things in the order they were recorded and simply don't mind the extra clicks. /steve

Looks like giving people a choice although nice was pretty much a waste (I have 5 dvrs 3 active and changed 1 of them once, just cuz I could).
Date (new). I switched to date old when we first got the capability, but then Group Play didn't work properly.
I would sort by alpha except there is still a GLARING ERROR in the design, which is if you sort by alpha, you typically would want to do that to find the program title easier. On the HR2x, it also sorts the episode titles within the folder by alpha, which is just plain stupid because they need to still be sorted by date so that you can watch serial programs in the order they were broadcast. If the broadcast dates are all scrambled up (by the episode titles being sorted by alpha) it basically shoots that option in the foot. To maintain serial order within the folder you are limited to sorting by record date. F'-in Reee-DICKulous.
Tivo had it right. If you are going to steal, then steal from the best. Fix this now, DTV.
+1 here with in a folder means you want to watch the oldest first in most cases... except for news ... maybe a sub toggle to set a preference by type of show...
I sort all of my DVR's playlist using A-Z. I hope some day a second sort by option is added for folders or at least folders to be sorted oldest to newest no matter how you sort your playlist.

I have no clue what or how this happened.* I just purchased a new PC with Vista and without doing anything, it saw my HR20 and HR22 and networked so for the first time, I can bring down my pics and tunes.* I am very weak in networking so I have no idea how it all set up but I am very thankful to the gods of Vista and "D" that it all just linked up...woohoo

+1. I default to sorting A-Z. The only reason I ever change to sort by date is when I want to watch the episodes of a single show in the order they were broadcast.
I have several shows that I don't have time to watch during the normal season. For instance, I haven't watched a single episode of "24" or "The Office" this season. When I get around to watching them, I'll sort the folder by date.

I record several shows on TNT. Closer, Saving Grace, Raising the Bar, Trust Me, etc. I put them at the bottom of my PRIORITIZER because I know they're on several times a week, and I don't want them to bump shows on other channels that only run once a week. Because I do this, the shows are sometimes recorded "out of sequence", if you know what I mean.
If the HR2x was "smart" enough to sort them by First Aired date, it wouldn't matter, and would almost invariably be the order anyone who AUTOPLAY's a folder would want to see them in, IMHO. /steve

I agree that would be better.
I have caught up on some old series that had been on for several years before I started watching them. For instance, I didn't start watching "Andromeda" until it was off the air. I didn't start watching "Smallville" until last year. In both case, I just set the DVR to record all shows for a year (or so). Then I started watching them. I went to tv.com and printed out a list of all recordings and watched shows in the order of the printed list. I crossed shows off the printed list as I watched them.
If the guide was ordered by first air date, that would have helped matters.

Ditto here. I couldn't imagine trying to find anything if I didn't sort it A-Z.
I do wish within a folder I could sort new to old though while still having the main playlist itself in A-Z sort.

I never knew that TiVo said, "if you are going to steal, then steal from the best." :) I'm sure there are many people who feel TiVo felt that way (mostly Replay people.) :)
Steal is such a strong, harsh word. Especially when DIRECTV paid lots of money to license technologies legitimately. (Both Replay and TiVo.)

Most often is "Date (New)". I have many archived movies on most DVRs so "Date (old)" doesn't work so well. But I have used the other forms from time to time.
Hopefully someday I'll be able to file items into my folders (like Movies) so I could experiment with and stick other sorts.
Cheers,
Tom

I voted other as my playlist is never long enough(more than 2-3 screensful (screenfulls?) to bother sorting. Newest first, the apparent default, is fine with me.

Usually Date (New) unless I have some VOD files, then I might switch to Expiration (First) to make sure nothing is going to expire.

I'd like A-Z at the top level, but then within folders I want new to old (or more correctly old to new - maybe that's where I confused you) because now within folders it's the same as the top level (so A-Z for me), causing me to have to sort through them to find the oldest episode of that show to watch. I believe the old Directivo's sorted exactly the way I'd like my HR2x to.
