Hi everyone, I love this site and I've been lurking for awhile now and I just signed up. I have a few questions hopefully you guys can answer. I recently got my directv hooked up (3/18) and I absolutely love it! Here are my stats - Directv Slimline dish SWM, HR23, D12 Standard receiver - (NYC). So, when my installer was going through the setup screens on my hr23 he was like "Wow 103 degrees!" and to me it was a foreign language and he was like "for HD 103 is great!" Fast forward to last night when I was poking around in the menus it now says 101 degrees. Is that supposed to happen? Did I do something wrong? I don't ever remember even changing anything, I just clicked on Satellite under the system setup.

Second question is when using hr23 with TWC362 the red button doesn't work but works with my d12 standard reciever, does anyone know why that is?

Thanks in advance, sorry for all the newbie questions and lack of terminology, knowledge of DIRECTV.

on the sat screens there are arrows on the right side that will let you see all the diff sats..

So, basically the 3 rows show the 3 different satellites and one of them is 103?

rows are the individual transponders on that sat...
on the right side it shows what sat.. the arrow buttons next to that will switch to the next sat..

Are you talking about the (+) (-), I don't think I have arrows (not sure, not by TV at the moment).

The DirecTV satellites at 101W supply you with your standard-def (SD) national channels as well as your SD locals. The national and local HD channels come from satellites at 99W and 103W, which are just to each side of 101.

Depending on the LNB pack on your dish, it may also be picking up a few transponders from the 110 and 119 satellites, though you don't need these unless you subscribe the Spanish or Chinese programming.

yep.. there maybe as many as 8 sat screens depending on setup.. most common are 3 or 5 (plus a SWM)..

Regarding your weather channel question--"local on the 8's" is currently only available on the SD version of the channel, not HD. If you have "hide SD duplicates" enabled (under Display) it won't show up in your guide.

Is it possible the installer was refering to the internal temp of the HR23? I'm just thinking out loud here because if he was refering to the satellites I have to wonder how long he has been on the job, although it wouldn't suprise me if it wasn't long knowing how the treat installers.

Yep.

One little trick I pulled was to un-hide the SD duplicates, then create a Quicktune shortcut for the SD Weather Channel and re-hide the SD duplicates again.

So now if I want the SD version of the Weather Channel (with the local weather conditions) I just use Quicktune.

Also the same weather information is available on the active channel. It's the same data, same thing.

There are no dumb questions........just dumb answers. Ignorance can be fixed......stupid is forever.

What was the question?

And, welcome!

Thanks, guys & gals! It's been a couple of weeks and now that I know how to find my signal readings, what do they mean? I get 90's, mid 90's, 100's, and one 89, what does that one low number mean its in the 60's sometimes 70's? What about the zero's and hundreds together?

Most of your transponder sat readings should/will be in the 90 range, some likely in the 80 range.

There are some transponders that represent signals from nearby markets and other areas which you may get to show up with lower signal levels (and even a few "0"s). That's normal.

Only those transponders destined for your market area should show up in the sat signal meter readings with 80-90 range readings.

If you get all the channels, especially the HD channels, for which you have subscribed and those levels...you're in great shape.

Excellent. Hopefully you don't have a hurricane or earthquake that moves it, because it doesn't get any better. High signal strength means more resistance to rain/wind-related signal loss.
