View Full Version : Connect DVR to SWM or WB68?

OK, so I have my parts list down and now I have one last question for the guru's.
Would you rather connect a receiver to the SWM or to the WB68? I'm going to use 2 of the 4 ports on my SWS splitter to run my downstairs DVR's. Upstairs, I should have the ability to run 2 cables to all my DVR's. With that said, would you rather connect a DVR to the Zinwell or to the SWM? Besides only having to run one cable, any plusses or minuses to using one vs. the other? I seem to remember someone mentioning that they were getting a signal boost of 5 or so points by using the SWM. Can anyone confirm that?
Thanks in advance,

I would rather have it connected to the SWM because you only have to have one line connected and no BBCs. It looks cleaner not having two bulky bbcs hanging out the back of the DVR. I cannot really say about the boosted signal. I would think that the signal would be the same since it it pulling it from the same place. The swm also powers the lnbs all the time versus having the DVR power it on the WB68.

If you have any long cable runs (> 100 feet) or any RG-59 in your installation, there is no comparison: connect the HD DVRs to the SWM port(s).
I am driving an HR20 and an HR21 from one SWM-8 port and a one into two splitter; no problems even though the HR21 is at the end of a 120 foot RG-59 cable run after the splitter.
Prior to the installation of the SWM-8, the HR21 had lost many of its HD channels, although it had operated fine for the previous ten months on the same interior cabling. DTV and the local installation company were both pretty clueless on fixing the problem and had advised that the SWM-8 would likely not help things. The opposite was true.

Your signature indicates you have an R15. Keep in mind that isn't SWM compatible, so you would have to run that off of two cables anyway, either from your SWM-8 legacy ports or your WB68.

cable reduction and stability is why I love SWM..

Agree. I also love it because it solves my LOS issue to 119 without having to change the LNB or set manual recordings in the middle of the night anymore! :-)

Cool, thanks for the replies guys. I had forgotten to mention in this thread that I was getting 2 new DVR's, so they would be ports #3 and #4. My R15 and RCA are owned, so until they die, I'll be dragging them around and hooking them up to the Zinwell's.
It looks like there may be some advantages to using the SWM on the two new boxes, so I'll probably take that route. It will save me from having to fish a second cable in the one room that is already wired. The other rooms have no cables at all, so I'm going to have to run new stuff there no matter what.

Think he has a SL3.. then he doesn't need 119 or 109 (?)

No I have a SL5. When a SWM-8 is used on a SL5, all the guide data is streamed from 101 no matter what channel you are tuned to.
