On the 501/508 or all the dish PVR's for that matter what exactly is a telephone line used for?

I know they are used for PPV's which if I wanted to I could order on the phone if I really wanted one.  Do they use them to download any info or all off of the satellite now?

I run completely off cell phones in my home and really dont want to get a land line just for my PVR to work right.

Your PVR will work fine without a phone line..

As far as I know the only thing the phone is used for is PPV and of course caller ID. I've never had my 50Xs hooked up to a phone line. The grid info comes off satellite. My receivers aren't close to a phone jack. This way my kid can't order wrestling at $30 a pop.

Tarlyn, Welcome to DBSTalk! :hi:

All software comes from the satellite so your after there. Phonelines are also used for the Dish Interactive Customer Service application.

Its also used to make sure all receivers are at the same location. I dont think they enforce the phone lines so much unless you have 4-6 receivers on the account but not sure.
