Never tried it with a Directv dish but, i have tried to use my Sirius/XM inside with NO luck:(
Come to find out that while i did have a good line of sight for it... the glass in the window was preventing the signal from passing though (guessing cause it is so thick). Just my 2 cents....

I seen it done but it was very long ago. It was a single LNB. He mentioned he needed something to get the reception through the double panes of glass. It was on the 19th of an upper eastide apt building in New York City.

I had a buddy that did this for awhile with a single lnb 18" round Directv dish. It suprisingly worked fairly well considering it was behind glass (single pane). His signal levels would only get as high as mid 80's, and when it would rain it would always go out. It was kind of funny because even when it stopped raining he still had rain fade due to the water that got on the window.

I would have given him a squeegee on a pole for Christmas :lol::lol::lol:

As an installer I have done it twice.
Both times were last resort locations and they worked with a round dish. Tinted glass or screens will block the signal and if the dish is moved you have to re tune. Apartment management that balks at drilling for cable holes will also object to spiking the dish to the floor.

JoeGood to know it might at least work.

I would get an old receiver and a TV and practice with the signal meter until you can hit the 101 pretty easily. Then figure a way to stabilize the mast.
Know that the elevation is measured as a line between the top of the dish and the LNB.......not the angle of the arm itself.
Go for it.
Joe
I've seen it done a couple of times for bookmakers' shops in Glasgow with larger round dishes where they were located on the ground floor of tenement buildings.
This site also has some ideas....

I've done two installs with slimline-5 and one slimline-3 dish aimed out of a fake window in the attic of 1million dollar homes. :)
Somewhere on this site is a picture of another similar install that worked.

With a slimline-3 and Plexiglas window it's quite easy.

This is good to know. I had doubts about the KA band working and just passed on the attempt.
Hmmmmm!

It has varing results depending on what type of window pane is in place.
Double pain windows don't work well at all.
A standard single pane window works fine (with a 10-15 point loss); UNLESS it has a high lead content then you will continually have signal issues no matter what you do (unless you replace the pane of course ;)

Could you mount it in the attic? Will the dish pickup thru the wood/shingles on the roof or not? That would make a nice, no visible dish install. Of course in the winter, snow buildup on the roof may be a problem...
No, inside attic would absolutely not work.

It will pickup though fibergass though ;)
Alot of people use the garden effect type fiverglass rock covers to conceal the dish. you could mod a section of roof to fiberglass or plexy almost like a skylight to shoot through.
Good to know it might at least work.:cool:As long as you don't require anything from the Ka slots...

I wish I could find the pic! A DTV cx who was tired of junkies stealing his dish from a flat roof townhouse installed one of those FG boulders to cover the dish. He bolted the FG rock to the roof for security............Then he arranged a mannequin as if a boulder from the sky had crunched a trespasser, complete with blood (paint) running to the drain.
You would have had to be there.

Double pane glass will block signal. I herd single glass is ok and plastic will work. But I could be wrong.

As long as you don't require anything from the Ka slots...All I need is 101 sats. I did order an HD DVR but only because of the VOD and other things is offers over it's SD counterparts.

IV won´t allow a HD DVR to be activated without 103/99.

You don't need an HD DVR for that... you can get all the features of an HR2x in an R22, minus the HD. Problem there is it's difficult to request a particular model so you may want to go pick one up locally if possible or online somewhere.

beat the down load or get a waiverI could do that(I've been told by the FCC to go ahead and install the dish) but I want to do this amicable(and not have to force their hands on this).

hes talking about beating the software download when you are activating the receiver.
also why are you trying to install a dish inside? is it an apartment or something? if so you are basically screwed on getting an installer to install anything inside pointing out a window.
and where did the FCC tell you to install it at ????

and where did the FCC tell you to install it at ????It's a ground level duplex. Why inside? Because I've been told by the landlord that they don't accept dishes. The FCC said it was fine to install it outside behind the house(Which I was going to do).

If you have an area of the yard that is for your exclusive use, you could install the dish on a non-permanent mount (tripod, non-pen roof mount, etc.) and you'd be fully protected under federal OTARD regulations. Landlords can prevent you from attaching the dish to the building or putting it into the ground permanently, but can't legally stop you from using a temporary, non-destructive mount in an area for your exclusive use.
