Hello,
Does removing a leased DVR from my account extends my contract?
It went bad about a week ago, and I don't have the protection plan, so they're probably going to extend my contract to replace it. I just rather deactivate it.
Thanks,
Victor

when you replace a LEASED unit through DTV ERP (Equipment Replacement Program) they will send a LEASED and it does not extend or renew a service agreement.

But Victor doesnt have the protection plan so it would extend the contract.

Incorrect. LEASED replaced with LEASED regardless of Protection Plan is not to extend any service agreement. Protection Plan would only change the case if it was an OWNED receiver in which case Protection Plan replacement would not trigger a new agreement.
The benefit to Protection Plan when replacing LEASED equipment is you are not charged D&H.

Stupid question here, but when I first saw "D&H", I just thought it was a 'fat-finger' thing and someone hitting the D instead of the S for "S&H". I've seen it over and over since then.
What is it that people mean when they use "D&H"?

Lol! Is that a fat joke?!
D* uses Delivery & Handling as opposed to Shipping & Handling. It's habit for me to call it D&H even though most everyone will call it S&H.

Victor,
One of the forum members - The Merg - put together a thread that addressed this question pretty well. I haven't gone back and re-read the entire thread, but I believe the information in the first post is pretty accurate.
If you have a technical problem with your leased receiver, DirecTV should replace it with a like-function receiver (i.e. HD DVR for HD DVR, though it may be a different model) without it causing an extension of your commitment.
When you call to activate the new receiver, that is when things tend to go awry, unfortunately. I've had to replace several DVRs over the years, and though I had the protection plan, I believe this would still apply. When the replacement was processed, there was something coded into the system that indicated it was a replacement. When I called to activate, I explained that I was activating a replacement receiver for receiver X (giving card #) and that there should be a code associated with the replacement receiver indicating it's a replacement and that it should NOT trigger a commitment extension. I don't know how critical it is to give that detail (and unfortunately, I don't recall what the code was and how it was referred to - you could ask the person who processes the replacement). Anyway, I was able to activate the replacements and I've never had a problem with an erroneous extension.

That is a pretty good explanation and is accurate.
