Ugh, they've been leading up to it with DC marathons.
Hours and hours of either full pots or empty pots. I still don't see the appeal of this show for more then a few episodes.

Sound macab, but I sometimes think people just tune into to see if someone falls overboard,a ship goes down,or to see which captain's son or brother picks a fight with them ! Sort of the same thing with Ice Road Truckers.People are just tuning into to see if that jerk Drew falls through the ice with his truck <lol>
I'm a fisherman that's why I like it.

Yeah good start! Looks like a lot of bad things happen. :eek2:
Looks like this is gonna be the best season yet! Too bad Capt Phil is out for the King Crab season.
Jimmy, I believe it was in HD last year,

It sure looks good.I will be away for the next 17 days.Too bad.But my DVR will be busy !
I forgot if it was HD or stretch.
I was definitely in HD last year. I think the year before, they started using HD cameras but produced the show SD IIRC.

I finally got around to watching it last night. Maybe it was me, but it seems like Discovery has had a big hand in the pre-season setup of the boats. I don’t remember them all being within spitting distance of each other last year in Dutch Harbor. Plus you had the opening scene where they all sailed in together with all their pots on the back of the boats.
The burn barrel thing as a long standing tradition seemed staged. I didn’t think these guys were that close before the past couple of seasons. Especially when, I think, last season the “Time Bandit” sailed off before the rest of them. I know they all know each other, but I just didn’t think they were that close.
Anyway, I really liked the first episode and it seems like this season will be a lot more interesting than last season.

I agree with the "set up" comment. In the first season there were SO many more ships. It seems odd that the only guys at this "tradition" were the ones featured on the show with cameras on their boats. I love the show, but there is a point where reality becomes unreality... usually after 3 seasons... this show may be way past that!
Not sure if you mean they had more boats fishing for crab or if they just had more featured on teh show?
The first season (and for a long time before that), they did an entirely different style of quota where the whole fleet had a certain amount of quota to pull from. When it was gone, they called the season. It was beleived that this system caused the boats to take chances, stay up for days on end and operate unsafely in an effort to catch as much as that could as fast as they could and caused more accidents.
Now, each ship is assigned quota and they have a much longer period of time in which to catch that amount. I'm not sure how it was assigned, but eventually, that lead to some of the larger boats buying quota from the smaller boats and that greatly diminished the crab fleet. Many of those boats still fish, but go for other unregulated fisheries.
As far as the number of boats featured, I would guess the show also thought if they only did 4 boats this year it would allow them to show more from people's favorite boats. Maybe they did surveys in the off seson or something?

I recall a Special that aired last season showing the boats being outfitted by the production crews before they started filming the upcoming season.
I don't recall what the distances were between boats, but it would seem logical to suspect they were close to each other during this time. As I recall, it was a rather extensive outfitting, what with camers on the booms and rails and wheelhouse and community area. They even tried underwarter photography and made extensive use of bow cameras in addition to chase boats. It was a considerable undertaking.
I agree on the relationships of the Captains and the seeming staging of the burn barrel. First time they've even mentioned the barrel or what it signifies - or did they even mention what it signifies?
Your observation is dead on regarding the closeness of the captains prior or during the last 4 seasons. I too seem to recall that captains were pretty aloof of each other and more crew-centric. Maybe the change has something to do with the new quota system, where it behooves a captain to be on the good side of any other captain who may become the source or recipient of a quota purchase.
I enjoyed the season opener as well, but could have done without some of the theatrics.
I love this show, but the burn barrel thing was so fake that it was funny.

There definitely are a little more set ups this season (all four boats side by side on the ocean) but the show as whole still is reality. They still gotta go out and catch crab.
