From MediaDailyNews (http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=103011): The top line takeaway from Thursday's briefing is that we are consuming more media than ever before - an average of about 8.5 hours daily across all adult demographic groups - but that TV, especially live TV viewing, remains the "800-pound gorilla," accounting for the vast majority of time the average person spends watching screen-based media.

The study also found a seemingly contrarian insight that it is not the youngest adults who consume the most screen-based media, but boomers ages 45-54 who consume about an hour more total daily screen-based media than all other demographic groups. The researchers said this is because boomers are adopting new media, especially computer-based media in the workplace, but have not abandoned traditional TV viewing, and the net effect has been incremental usage of media.

Our TVs start their day at 6 AM and end it at midnight. Houshold ages are 59 and 62.

I suppose the premise of the article is correct. At our age we are somewhat late discovering new media sources and loath to give up our old habits. But we're catching up with a vengance.:p

The advent of the DVR and all of its bells and whistles have us eagerly enjoying programing we might otherwise have missed. Just having the option of watching one thing while taping another or watching something pre-recorded and recording two others is enough to keep us glued to the tube for more hours than we've ever done before.

The internet isn't adding much to that, but we may be different in that respect. Others may well be enjoying that bonanza as well.

Our household falls into the "65-plus" category. We both have our computers on first thing in the morning, spend alot of hours working on hobbies on the computers, and do see some video and listen to music. The DVR's do sometimes record things during the day. But most recording is at prime time. We watch TV during our recorded prime time from about 6 pm to 11 pm nightly. Season shifting allows us to maintain that schedule year 'round.
