To feed a WB68 from a SL5 LNB only a minimum of two cables are needed even though the SL5 LNB has four outputs. The other two outputs are unused.
Is this correct?
What advantage would one get running all four cables from the SL5 LNB to the WB68?
Total of four non dvr receivers.

You need to run all four cables to the WB68.

You'll run into trouble since in a WB 68 setup each feed 'locks' into one of the 4 sides of the signal: 13v/ 18v / 13v 22k tone / 18v 22k tone.
You'll miss out on two of those when not running 4 wires.
You need to run all four coax. With only 4 non-DVR receivers, I see no need or advantage to having a multiswitch, feed all four directly from the dish.

Oh! I forgot about the 13 and 18 volt with tone.
Thanks Mertzen!

I thought about that also.
I'm just trying to understand this:
1. A dual LNB (old 18" dish) can operate two receivers with direct cables.
With more than two receivers, then the two cables goes to a 3x4 multiswitch which can operate four receivers because the 13 and 18 volts are seperated at the switch.
2. With a SL5 LNB you can operate up to four receivers with direct cables but that leaves out the expandability of later switching to DVR's.
This brings up my question of using the existing two cables from the old install and replace the 3x4 switch with a WB68 and still run four receivers.
I think I'm confused how the 3x4 switch operates much differently than the WB68.

The Dual LNB dish (18") only has to see Orbital Slot 101. The SL5 has to see 99/101/103/110/119 and stack those all onto the coax.
To achieve this they needed to switch to 4 switch modes instead of 2 (because the coax does not have enough bandwidth to have all of them on the line at once). Thus 4 cables are needed for the switch to lock in instead of just 2.
Grentz's explanation put a very nice bow on this thread.

Thank you very much Grentz!
Your explanation does make sense to me now. Likewise the SL3 LNB (non-SWM) would have the same bandwidth issue even though it doesn't see the 110/119 sats.

Absolutely! :gott:

If you only want sd content from 101 a WB68 should work just fine with only 2 cables run to the 13v/18v no tone ports. You would actually be able to see the hd content from 99 as well but would be missing a large portion still with out 103 kinda making it a moot point.

Depending on location, you might lose SD locals if you get them from 119.

Thanks evan_s.
I looks like the best and least expensive option is to got with a cable to each of the receivers.

Thanks kevinwmsn.
I don't get any locals from 119.
