View Full Version : Is the SWM LNB Active w/o Signal

I am attempting to determine if I am able to diplex the SWM signal with my cable internet. I do not have the dish mounted yet.
If I were to setup a test situation in my living room (diplexors, PIs, receivers, etc), will the SWM broadcast on the correct channels?
Is there away to determine if the receiver is able to communicate with the SWM LNB? I expect zero signal strength, but simply being able to communicate (on the upstream channel particularly) is what I am looking for.,
Thoughts?

I'd say try and see.
But also check the frequency that your cable company is sending the internet section on. Go to the cable modem utilities often at 192.168.100.1 Mine run between 40-700Mhz and hence no problem with diplexing. Yours might be different though.

If the cable modem stops working I can certainly determine if it won't work.
However, if the SWM isn't active and the cable modem is still working, I haven't determined anything. Also, I won't know if the SWM portion is passing properly.
My cable modem upstream is 34 MHz and downstream is 591MHz, so I am hoping that it will work out.

If the dish is completely out of alignment, all the SATs will show zero AND the SWM channels will show zero.
About the only thing you would "know" is if the 2.3 MHz was passing so the receiver would boot into the SWM mode.

Definitely iffy. Make sure the diplexers are rated 2-2250mHz. I would try to avoid that line being the one with the power inserter if possible. If multiple receivers are going to be installed, make this one the last one to be booted up, so the swm channel it gets assigned is a higher frequency. Trial and error is all I can say. If it works it works, if not....
If I were you, I would use directv approved SWM 2 way splitters as your diplexers. This guarantees that they are the correct frequency. This is what I use when I diplex in off air antennas in SWM setups. I have had problems using normal diplexers.

As a follow up, the cable internet installer came today and it turns out that all of my outlets are run outside to a box. Therefore I do not need to use one of them to bring the signal into the condo.
Although it would have been interesting to find out.
