Well, it looks like CSN has made both channels 24 hr HD channels. They are now in HD full time on the Comcast system (channels 720/721). So far every Giants game has been in HD on CSNBA and A's game on CSNCA. As of yet though it looks like D* and CSN BA/CA have yet to come to an agreement to carry both channels in HD full time, hopefully that will change soon. Tonights Giants Game against the Padres is in HD on Comcast but not in HD on D*. CSNBA is also producing their nightly sports show in HD as well as Chronicle Live, both shows look great. Lets hope soon for those Nor Cal/NV viewers we get our RSN's in HD full time soon!

Well the only reason is becuase they played anoth one of me locals teams.
The Giants game was listed in the guide in HD until 20min before the game started. Then it was cancelled in HD and only showed in SD. I think we are in for a rough road this season when it comes to HD broadcasts.

Anyone know why this is like this? If they broadcast the SD versions of these channels and sometimes the HD, why don't they just do full-time HD?
Also, I have a feeling this is old news....but what happened to Fox Sports Bay Area? Did Comcast just buy it or?

yeah, I don't know what 'full time' really means in this situation but so far this season on 696-1 via D* only two of five Giants games have been in HD. That isn't full time in my book. I see no difference in this current year than it was last year. I would think a true 'full time channel' would eliminate the -1 channel. I could be wrong on that but I'm not wrong on the lack of HD programming. This is the main reason I won't purchase EI or CI b/c of the lack of HD programming.

My guide data has changed suddenly too which makes a recording impossible. I like D* but the least value for my dollar comes from this Comcast package from the BA/Sac. I don't live in the same state and I get stuck with it. If I had a list of grips about D* (which wouldn't be that long...Im a happy viewer mostly) I'd want a choice of markets if I lived outside the immediate geographic area. Someone in Reno (me) shouldn't be stuck getting Sac Kings. Why can't I choose Utah Jazz or the Suns? Places like Salt Lake get both the baseball team in CO and in AZ. Same with hockey, SLC subs get AZ and CO. That's better but still should have a choice in SLC or Reno to choose Reds or Red Wings without paying for extra packages.
Last year I had, on average, every other Giants HD broadcasts blocked out while the SD was fine. Required a call every time and almost always was corrected within minutes. Still the next week I'd have to do the same thing. Got old. Hope at least that bug is cleared up. The lack of HD (Giants, Sharks) is ridiculous when you compare it to other markets. Worst value on the D* menu imo.
according to CBA website the Giants game vs the padres on friday was in HD but not the saturday game, sundays game is listed in HD.

I gotta say the CSN SD video feed picture quality was some of the worst I have seen in quite some time. TERRIBLE would be an accurate description. It looks like something the local public HS would produce.

Couldn't agree more. It's completely UNwatchable. Today's Giants game (Sunday) is SD again and so bad there are times it's hard to spot the baseball. Last fridays Giants game was in SD on D* also. This service is worse than last year so far. Only two Giants game since the start of the season have been in HD. If this is Comcast/D*'s version of 'full time' I'm not sure they konw what the true meaning is. Next thing I'm waiting for is a price increase on the regional sports package. 'We need to increase revenue to cover cost incurred during our transition to 'full time' broadcast.' It just doesn't seem D* is interested at all in making this right. All the bigger markets in this package are a much better value than CSNBA has ever been and even some of the smaller one's would be a much better bargain. Absolutely unacceptable in it's current state.
i was watching a bit of the giants vs pads game today and had to quit because of the crappy PQ, even the kids were laughing at the video quality. :(

I can say that todays Giants game was on the HD channel for Comcast but I don't think it was HD, comparing it side by side to the A's game that was in HD on CSNCA you could see the difference. I think they're upscaling to HD on some of the Giants/Sharks/Warriors/A's games. Both the Sharks and Warriors games were broadcast on the HD channel for CSNBA. I know when the new studios opened last week for CSNBA they made special note of the fact their facilites were now HD and all shows they produced would be in HD (Bay Area Blitz, Sportsnight, Chronicle Live, and all pre and post game shows) I would think games are soon to follow.
As for why D* doesn't have it 24 hr HD yet I am not sure. But I'd venture to guess that Comcast is worried about losing customers becuase they have decided to not meet the NFL Networks demands for channel placement on a lower teir and will be dropping it 5/1. If D* has both channels in HD full time you could see an exudous of sports fans to the likes of D*. I would hope in a few months all this will be worked out and we'll have CSN full time in HD. I guess the only other thing we can do is write to both D* and CSNBA/CA and see if we can get responses.
I no longer think any one at Comcrap or D* care if we ever get a local team in HD. The bay area is the fifth largest TV market in the country and our lack of HD sports is shameful. The SD picture is beyond bad. I refuse to watch and SD game, I'll just listen to KNBR instead.

I'm glad to see there is some discussion of this. I tuned in this afternoon expecting to see the Giants/Padres in HD, but there was nothing on 696-1 -- the guide said the next thing was "Upcoming: Giants @ Dodgers." Tuned in and watched on 696 instead and almost lost my lunch -- I guess someone now thinks that YouTube has set the bar for video quality. Sorry, but as others have said, that is unwatchable.
Shortly after the game ended, I was talking to a friend who has Comcast, and he said the game was HD there. I was a little steamed. I was under the impression that as long as the game was being provided in HD by the RSN (in this case, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area), that D* would carry it. If this isn't the case, I would like to know the reason, as the channel is otherwise just sitting in black.
I'm starting to think this is a D* decision not to carry the HD. If as some have stated these games are in HD on comcast then it is D* not giving us the feed. My guess is Bandwidth. D* doesn't have the Bandwidth to show all the games in HD so they are picking and choosing witch ones to show.
Though my conspiracy minded/pro D* bias tends to blame Comcast for not making these games available in a timely manner... I don't see other non-Comcast sports channels having the same issues

It really makes me wonder who is at fault here, games are broadcast in HD,yet all of us who subscribe to Direct.only get SD feed, why? Is Comcast playing hardball or is direct.being cheap and not giving us what we pay for-HD!,either way we loose in this deal.As far as picture quality it was so bad I did not even watch, that sucks!!,thank god for radio.:nono2:

Here's a thought: I believe this is the first season where they are not airing the Giants and A's games on the same channel -- as near as I can tell, all the Giants games are one Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, while the A's are on Comcast SportsNet California. Have we seen a situation yet where both teams are playing at the same time, and both games are being carried in HD by D*? Maybe for whatever reason, they can only get one HD feed at a time from Comcast in the Bay Area??

Believe me, there is no issue with bandwidth, they still have plenty for HD sports.
I think its a contract issue between Comcast and D*.

Yeah that could be it, they might not have the HD feed yet.

I think both sides have "dug their heals" in so to speak. We have read numerous times about the arguments going back and forth between D* and CSN. But, it's not just D* that is having issues regarding HD, it's my understanding as of yet CSNCA HD is not being carried by UVerse and Suddenlink doesn't carry CSNCA at all and doesn't carry CSNBA HD and +. I know there are some other companies having issues too. CSN wants more per subsriber for both channels. Comcast is having this exact same fight with ESPN over ESPNU and the NFL Network. Everyone wants more money per sub and wants their channels moved into a teir where they see more of an audience. So if you ask me, to a point both sides are at fault.

And this is why cable companys should not be allowed to own cable networks. If Comcast didn't own these I think we would have them already.

Finally get a Giants game in HD (afternoon game no less) and the audio is terrible. Dropouts often and annoying as heck.
This thread is nothing but conjecture, speculations, and rumours. It does nothing to enhance our viewing experience. It would be nice to hear the facts from D* and Comcast.

Well, this isn't speculation or rumour when I tell you this SF/LA HD feed has gone downhill since the start. Four of five complete loss of signal and a 'phone line only' audio start the the fourth inning. Many breakups and audio dropouts. Kinda is matching the play of the Giants. Johnson gets pounded again.

You can say it's a "rumor" if you want, but I can tell you for a fact Comcast has both CSNCA and CSNBA full time in HD for their subs. It's been on for a week now, all their shows are now produced in HD.

If its only been a week I'm sure it'll take some time for D* to get them on full time, if at all. Hopefully they will.
That would be adding 2 HD channels to the spot beam. Would they do that?

The channels would be carried nationally, not spot beam because they would be available to any SportsPack subscriber in the US.

Well at least Red Sox/A's is going to be HD tonight. Really pissed me off last night to not have it in HD, and of course the Sox feed was, but I was blacked out.
On the other hand, considering how badly the Sox played, better for me to now watch too closely.

It is horrifyingly bad. Many shows should be in HD aren't, many shows that are in HD flip back and forth between HD and non-HD....
Why isn't this just a full time HD channel?
