The ongoing confusion about Windows 7 builds continues. This is the best easy-to-understand summary I have seen. It should be required reading for anyone downloading various Win7 software.

According to the author of that page, as of right now, 7077 is the newest release, NOT 7106. /steve

So, what is the latest build number?

Actually, his article is in error...

Microsoft has changed their course a little bit this time. The "70" series (i.e. 7076 & 7077) are the builds leading to the RC. The "71" series is leading to the actual RTM.

Microsoft has apparently taken this "forked" approach to allow the testing of the 70's while they build the RTM in the 71's. It's a different strategy than previously used by them.

The bar gets really high for RC bugs, and anything that will be fixed for RTM, but might be too risky to fix yet for RC, goes into the 7105+ builds.

There is no legal build publicly available beyond the Beta you have. Some of these builds have been leaked to "download sites" that are not Microsoft. Use them at your own risk...

The next actual Microsoft release to the testing public will occur in the next 4 weeks. As you will have to do a clean install for whatever you download... I would wait for the next GENUINE release so you don't have to do a clean install now and then another in 4 weeks... unless thats your thing...

So, what is the latest build number?
