View Full Version : Does anyone have any idea when the next iPhone is coming?
I am eligible for an upgrade next month. I have decided to go with the iPhone. I keep hearing that a next gen iPhone is right around the corner. What's everyone hearing? Should I upgrade next month or wait and see what the next couple months have in store?

I heard two rumors, which I'm sure you can find easily online on a forums site like macrumors.com:
1. a new iPhone with smaller form factor is coming
2. a new iPhone with more capacity is coming
They are not always right, or even always close, but something to look at:

I don't have a better source than anyone else but Engadget Mobile says it will be in June, so if I were in the market I would wait it out.

Can the iPhone be opened up for other providers, besides AT&T? I hate AT&T, and am stuck with them for internet and landline where I live, I won't use them for Cell service.

I'm far from an expert on this but you can jail-break it and use it on T-Mobile and possibly other regional GSM/GPRS carriers like Cincinnati Bell (I don't know for a fact about anything other than T-Mobile) but obviously never on a CDMA network (Verizon / Sprint / Alltell). You would have to buy one without a contract or pay to get out of your contract with AT&T though - again I'm far from an expert on it.
Well, lots of rumor sites seem to agree that something is coming in June or July. A couple of places cited this report from DigiTimes that purports to be a list of suppliers for various parts and states that are supposed to deliver in May, which I suppose makes June possible (I honestly have no idea how long it takes to produce handsets after getting the parts) http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/NewsSearch.asp?DocID=PD000000000000000000000000009 613&query=IPHONE
Also, the last iPhone rev was in June also IIRC.
I read there may be a new version without WiFi that will presumably sell for a lot less. Apparently some 3.0 developers figured it out after reviewing some of the upcoming operating system specs. /steve

I heard,
32 Gigabytes
Faster 3G(HSUPA)
Thinner (more like the iPod touch)
Improved graphics
Video recording/messaging
$200-300
Launching June.
Of course this is all speculation, but I'm am positive this is true or at least 90% true.
I'd hold off but if you do get one now you could probably upgrade for cheap.

Not saying one thing or another, but do note that ATT like most larger companies runs their services independently for the most part.
I have had nothing but great luck with ATT Wireless CS and I have had plenty of time to try them out through their ATT Blue First Gen -> ATT Blue Second Gen -> Cingular -> ATT Wireless changes which left some major issues on many of the long time customer accounts.

I have a 1st generation iPhone with AT&T for nearly two years now. In the Phoenix area I have absolutely no complaints with their cell service. A good friend has a 3G iPhone and also says the cell service is great.
I'll be upgrading when the new phone comes out in early summer. Looking forward to 3G.

This wasn't intended to be an AT&T rant thread. FWIW, I've had nothing but great luck with AT&T.
Thanks to everyone for the replies. I'll cross my fingers that the new iPhone comes out in June. I'll patiently wait.

From an article posted on DSLReports, it looks like there will be a new iPhone out every year. While I just bought one last month, I have no plans to upgrade. I'm more intrigued by firmware version 3.0, which will add many features other smartphones have had for years, then a hardware upgrade.
A 3.2MP camera and Wireless N are the latest rumors. I have a 12.1 digital camera that has a flash and zoom, I could careless about the rez of the camera on the iPhone (which I never use), and my broadband connection is 15Mb, so 802.11n is no big deal, although if you had the option to choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz that would be cool. I think the upgrade from the original to 3G is a bigger update then from 3G to the new model. I primarily use the iPhone as an internet device, not a phone, and Edge is just awful, slightly faster than dial up, I find it useless for the most part. As for upgraded 3G, HSUPA or whatever it is, a lot of people have doubts whether AT&T will even support it. What many people forget is that the iPhone is available in dozens and dozens of countries around the world, from providers that are much more advanced then AT&T.
Since Apple just lowered the price of the 16gb refurbished iPhone to $150 I've decided to go that route rather than wait until June. $150 is just too sweet to pass up.
