what recievers are you still using? H2 and HR2x recievers (and I belive a most all other current models too) don't need a phone line..

Yes, those 3 receivers can use the network connection to do everything it can do with a phone line (which is basically order PPV using the remote)...

If he has no phone I would suspect caller ID wouldn't be needed

How would his cell phone show caller ID on his DirecTV receivers?

Well for one he could tape his phone to his TV screen

How would his cell phone show caller ID on his DirecTV receivers?

Can they use the network connections, sure. However, please note that per you customer agreement, you agreed to keep your receivers continously connected to a land based phone line.

Actually I just looked at the current Customer Agreement on the D* website, and it does NOT say that. Paraphrased, it says for optimal performance and to order ppv by remote, you should be connected. And if you're not connected they MAY investigate to determine if your receivers are where you say they are, or charge you full price instead of the mirror fee.
But it does NOT say you must keep all receivers continuously connected to a land based phone line.
I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV, but I think I read it correctly...

Is that really in the customer agreement? What about someone like me that has never had a land based phone line in my house?

Thats one way to read it. Got to love leaglease. :p (Cue the detractors in 3...2...1...)

Anyway, here's the section in question. It can be found here: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPage.jsp?assetId=P400042

(f) Phone Connections. For optimal performance of your Receiving Equipment, including ordering with your remote control or receiving certain Services, each of your receivers must be directly connected to the same land-based telephone line. If you add Service on additional TVs, you may purchase a separate subscription for each additional TV, or, if all your receivers are continuously connected to the same land-based telephone line, we can "mirror" programming to your additional TVs and charge you only the fee amount described in Section 2. You agree to provide true and accurate information about the location of your receivers. If we detect that any receiver is not regularly connected to a land-based telephone line, we may investigate and, if it is determined that the receiver is not at the location identified on your account, we may disconnect the receiver or charge you the full programming subscription price for the receiver.

Just another fine example of a poorly/rarely enforced policy. They should either enforce it or drop it.

You're right... sorry. It does say "must" and also says "may" later. So gives the company the discretion to enforce or not.
Peace.

I have 2 HD receivers,.... neither of witch is connected to a phone line. I canceled the phone line over a year ago when the cell service improved. DTV has never said a word about it. Of course,... I don't care for PPV,... I can get a better quality movie through rental than DTV can deliver,... even at 1080p,....(Blu-Ray) it's also cheaper to rent.

Keep in mind, you are still able to order PPVs even without a phone line (or network connection to the receiver)... They can be ordered via the website, or by calling customer service. This method will also make the PPV viewable on all receivers, unlike ordering with the remote.

At $5.99 + a pop,...... who wants to ? I most certainly don't. It costs a lot less to subscribe to Netflix,..... the quality is better,..... I keep them for as long as I want,..... the selection is better,.... there is no real downside.

PPV has gotten way too expensive. Special events,... like fights or Concerts,... or Wrestling are outrageous. V O D and D V R fees are going even higher. It's a racket !

No thanks ! :nono2:

When I was with Dish a few years ago they would charge you I think $5 a month if you did not hook a receiver up to a land line. The receiver would even display a warning when you didn't hook one up.
