I have a question about sites. I was wondering how the updates were done. In order to do an update to a site does the site need to be down? Or can the update be done with the site up and running?
With updates I mean updating an older site to us CSS or whatever needs to be done with the code.
Depends on how severe of an update it is and what type of update it is. Some can be done while things are running, others need to (or should) have the site offline.

Grentz answer is correct. If your web site is commercial and somebody might be trying to buy something or transfer money, for instance, then uploading revised or new web pages without restricting access until you are done might screw them up dearly.
On the other hand, on my personal web site uploading a few pages is highly unlikely to cause problems for anyone but me which happens.

I am a web designer and it depends on how severe the updates are. It shouldn't mess up the layout depending on what you do to the site via css,
