I was looking at various DVD-Recorder/VHS combination units so I can transfer old VHS tapes to DVD without having a seperate VCR and DVD recorder like I currently have, and I came across this one:

I have read countless reviews on this RCA DRC8335 combo unit...most of them negative. The few that are positive state that it works well for what it does. I probably won't get this unit, but I still can't rule out the possibility of still buying it. The one above is for a refurbished unit, and I feel that if it's refurbished, they might have fixed the problems that plagued this unit when it first came out in 2007 (VHS not playing right, DVDs not playing in other players, and the unit locking up with "HELLO" scrolling in the display)

Has anyone here had experience with this particular unit, and would a refurbished unit actually work?

Looking at the link you provided, I would not even consider it.
Frankly, I'd rather go to Wal-mart and pick up this one:

Well, I eventually decided it was way too risky to get the DRC8335 model. I don't want to risk getting a model that clearly has some serious technical problems.

I instead got the Zenith XBR716. Even though it has some negative reviews, it does have an equal share of positive reviews as well. It's also made by LG Electronics.
